Improving corporate earnings boon to market
PETALING JAYA: The improving corporate earnings, supported by the reopening of the economy as the Covid-19 vaccination programme expands, will help lift the Malaysian equity market. Analysts have projected that the benchmark FBM KLCI would continue to trend higher in the coming months and end the year on a strong note as investor confidence continues to build amid better corporate results. UOB Kay Hian Research, for instance, had raised its end-2021 FBM KLCI target to 1,680 from 1,640 previously. The raised target, which valued the market at 14.7 times 2021 price-earnings (PE), reflected a substantially higher earnings base after the inclusion of glovemaker Supermax Corp Bhd to the FBM KLCI. “We adjust our 2021-22 universe forecasts by +1.7% and +1.2%, respectively, pricing in the uptrend in the crude palm oil price and glove producers’ aggressive price hikes. We conservatively raise the year-end FBM KLCI target to 1,680, ” the brokerage said. “We deliberately assume a ... » Learn More about Improving corporate earnings boon to market

Corporate activism amid Myanmar’s crisis
Myanmar is once again governed by military junta after nearly ten years of civilian rule. The ousted state counsellor, Aung San Suu Kyi, and members of her party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), are under house arrest. The military leadership, like all military juntas, claims its rule is necessary for the benefit of the nation. Specifically, the junta has alleged voting irregularities and widespread fraud in Myanmar’s recent national election, an election that gave the NLD an overwhelming victory over the opposition party. And it claims that by issuing a one-year state of emergency, the junta will form a more disciplined democracy. Meanwhile, a free and fair election has been overturned, and dissent is being crushed as evinced by hundreds of arrests and a mounting death toll. There seems to be no room for compromise. The international community has condemned the actions of commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing’s regime. Tom Andrews, United Nations special rapporteur on ... » Learn More about Corporate activism amid Myanmar’s crisis
