China Focus: Is China’s poverty cure replicable?

Video Player Close BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- When Mao Zedong stood on Tian'anmen Rostrum in Beijing to declare the birth of New China in 1949, a Herculean task stood before him and the Communist Party of China (CPC) that he led: feeding and clothing 540 million Chinese people, nearly 90 percent of whom lived in rural areas. "Poverty is not socialism," "socialism means eliminating poverty," and "we must keep abreast of the times; that is the purpose of our reform," said Deng Xiaoping, the visionary chief architect of China's reform and opening-up which began in 1978 when the country's incidence of rural poverty was 97.5 percent. Eradicating poverty is a war China must win, with the hardest and most arduous tasks lie in the country's rural areas and poverty-stricken regions. In 2020, all of China's nearly 100 million rural residents living below the current poverty line shook off poverty after eight years of arduous efforts. Axpo signs deal to supply Danone with green energy from Polish wind farm

FRANKFURT: Swiss utility Axpo said it had signed a deal to supply electricity to French food firm Danone from British Green Investment Group's onshore wind farm in Poland , as companies look to step up their switch to green energy. Global food and drink company Danone has committed to securing all of its purchased electricity from renewable sources by the end of 2030, up from 50% in 2020. Axpo said the 10-year so-called power purchase agreement ( PPA ) will mean Danone's Polish operations will have access to round-the-clock power, taking the bulk of output from the 25.3 megawatt (MW) Jozwin wind park from January. Axpo will ensure delivery to Danone, provide for the marketing of any excess volumes and provide balancing power at times of low production via Axpo's access to the Polish spot market. Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

New Delhi: With a goal of promoting local manufacturing, India’s new budget tripled to 15 per cent the duty on imported solar lanterns , while the duty on solar inverters would rise from 5 per cent to 20 per cent. The off-grid solar industry, which already saw a 10 per cent decline in solar lantern sales in 2019-2020, is bracing for an ever bigger hit because of the new tariffs. As a result, off-grid industry executives are calling for a more measured approach that accounts for the current gap in quality local production while ensuring that India’s rural poor are protected from expected price hikes until that gap is filled. “We understand that the increase in duties has the undesirable effect of making certain products in the market expensive for end-customers,” said Piyush Mathur, board member of CLEAN, a trade group representing over 200 distributed renewable energy companies. “However, the new duty structure also offers our member companies an opportunity to build and ... » Learn More about Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future

New Delhi: Soaring fuel prices , environmental awareness and the new vehicle scrappage policy announced in Budget 2021 are likely to encourage a gradual shift to electric vehicles in the coming years. Personal vehicles make up more than 90 percent of registered motor-vehicles in India, with nearly 162.6 million two-wheelers sold between 2011-2020. Hence, for the nation to realize its EV vision, facilitating its uptake among individual consumers – both four- and two-wheeler users – is as important as electrifying commercial fleets. However, a critical obstacle to boosting individual uptake today, is the lack of charging infrastructure at convenient locations. With studies showing that about 50-80 percent of private charging happens at homes and another 15-25 percent at the workplace, it is essential to equip our buildings with the necessary infrastructure for EV charging . Aiming for the low-hanging fruits Charging points in buildings will need to primarily cater to ... » Learn More about OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future
