Passengers travelling to West Bengal and the northeastern States were stranded in Visakhapatnam as several trains were cancelled owing to the mass agitations in West Bengal on Saturday and Sunday.Four trains bound to Howrah were short-terminated at Visakhapatnam railway station on Sunday. Many passengers were seen squatting on the platforms and sleeping on the benches, not knowing when the trains would resume journey.“Our train arrived in Visakhapatnam around 3 a.m. on Sunday and it was short-terminated. Global card companies like Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc. are losing market share to upstarts in the world’s most innovative payments market: India.Transactions through India’s homegrown Unified Payments Interface — which allows mobile apps run by retailers, airlines and other firms to take payment directly from bank accounts — reached almost half the value of debit and credit cards swiped at stores last month, central bank data show.The surge in UPI transactions has taken place since 2016 when the interface was set up by an umbrella organisation of Indian banks. While a debate on justice for women who face abuse and cruelty is raging across the country, the plight of a woman in Chikkamagaluru who was attacked with acid in 2015 is proof of how the wait for justice can be an excruciating one. “He should have murdered me instead of pouring acid on my face. I would have been better off that way,” said Pushpa (name changed), 32, looking back on the pain she suffered every time she appeared in court or underwent surgery. So far, she has undergone 18 surgeries.The first hearing on the case was held on August 17, 2015, and the matter is still to be disposed of. Valapattanam: The image of the Kerala Police has been sullied of late owing to several instances of high-handedness. Yet another over-bearing conduct of the cops led to a tense situation near Valapattanam in Kerala’s Kannur district on Saturday. Four youth have been arrested after a trivial issue snowballed into a brief unrest. The trigger for the chain of events finally resulting in the arrest was the halting of a police jeep on the middle of the road, causing a traffic block. The incident happened at Alvil Pannerimukku around 11:30am on Saturday. The police stopped the official jeep in the middle of the road to impose fine on a person, who was found smoking in public. The Sub-Inspector summoned the offender to the jeep and levied fine from him. This caused traffic congestion in the area.
