Billionaire investor Howard Marks says investors might not be able to predict the future, but that does not mean they are powerless to deal with it. Citing a memo titled You Can’t Predict. You Can Prepare that he wrote in 2001, Marks said he raised the question about how one can prepare for something that he can’t predict exactly 19 years ago. His answer: “We can do so by recognising that they will inevitably occur, and by making our portfolios more cautious when economic developments and investor behaviour render markets more vulnerable to damage from untoward events." That reasoning, Marks says, suggests a glimmer of good news in the ongoing environment. Mumbai: Sustained buying into bank counters sent Indian equity gauges soaring for the second straight day, lifting stocks about a quarter from their late-March lows, with traders carrying forward bullish derivatives bets to June monthly contracts on expectations of a gradual re-opening of cities from Tokyo to Toronto. Both the Nifty and the Sensex climbed about 2 per cent on Thursday, the last in the May series, further consolidating gains above their 50-day moving averages. The Sensex ended up 595.37 points at 32,200.6 and Nifty gained 175.15 points to close at 9,490. The Bank Nifty extended Wednesday’s 7 per cent rally and ended up 2.5 per cent on Thursday. The banking index has fallen around 40 per cent this year. Rollover across futures contracts was at 91 per cent on Thursday.
