Thousands of residents in Songkhla, Yala and Narathiwat, in the very south of Thailand, have been evacuated from their homes due to flash flooding from nearly a week of almost continuous heavy rain. Local authorities say a total of 18,024 households across 19 districts have been impacted. In Yala, the Sai Buri River has burst its banks, flooding homes and farmland. The director of Yala’s Irrigation Project Office says they remain worried about the low-lying areas, adding that the total amount of rainfall to date has broken records set more than a decade ago. Landslides have also been reported but with no report of fatality or injuries. In Songkhla, 2 districts were flooded by rainwater coming down from the mountains, while some residences and farmlands on riverbank areas of Narathiwat were flooded. Local government agencies said food and other aid were already sent to the affected areas. Only essential travel is now allowed to and from the 5 coastal “red zone” provinces. ... » Learn More about Thailand News Today | Southern floods, Face mask fines, Thai Air Asia woes | January 8

Thailand powers towards a Green Economy
When Somphote Ahunai returned to Bangkok after completing an MBA degree in the US, he had $200 left in the bank. Today the renewable energy and electric vehicle company he founded has a market value of $5.6 billion and testifies to Thailand’s highly successful advance into green and sustainable industries. After initially working as a securities trader, Somphote first entered the renewables business when he started producing biodiesel fuel from a palm oil plantation he had acquired. Then he moved his company, Energy Absolute Pcl, into solar and wind farms, growing to become the nation’s number two publicly-listed electricity supplier. Now Somphote has become a key figure in Thailand’s efforts to steer its highly successful automobile manufacturing industry – the world’s 11th largest – beyond the internal combustion engine era into the design and production of electric vehicles and the lithium-ion batteries and charging stations that will power them. Tariffs, triumphs and thoroughness
Thoroughness is the key for tariffs to result in triumphs for both consumers and producers. This is especially important today since tariff charges are being considered to address our pork crisis. The pork price has significantly increased, partly causing an inflation uptick that should be controlled immediately. Tariff levels are a critical strategy for national economic development. If they are too high, they cuddle inefficient local producers. Consumers lose because they are forced to buy unnecessarily expensive products. If tariffs are too low, our producers will not be able to compete with imported products. Jobs will be lost and, with few options available, poverty will increase. The pork tariff levels today appear to have been working well. They are now at 40 percent. A small volume of 54,000 tons is given an in-quota 30-percent tariff because of special negotiated agreements. There is currently a proposal that for the targeted 400,000 imported tons, the 30 ... » Learn More about Tariffs, triumphs and thoroughness
Protests hinder trade at ‘operating’ Mandalay market
U Sat Maung Swe said the centre may be physically open for business but there is no one working due to the ongoing protests in the country. “There is no trading today because members of the association are protesting. Although the wholesale centre is operating, there is no trading inside. There was regular trading in the past few days. There is no one inside today so no trade is being conducted,” he said. The secretary pointed out that the prices of commodities have also been unstable due to the country's political unrest. “There are changes in the prices of the commodities. Prices are unstable because the banks are closed,” he said. Many banks across Myanmar recently suspended their services due to a majority of their staff participating in the civil disobedience movement as a sign of protest against the Tatmadaw's forced transfer of power. U Sat Maung Swe said this has led to difficulties for those requiring daily sales for their livelihood. “There are ... » Learn More about Protests hinder trade at ‘operating’ Mandalay market

Nokia, Hurt by Costly 5G Chip Mistake, Struggles to Catch Huawei
In the global race for 5G supremacy, Nokia Corp. bet big on the wrong computer chip. The Finnish giant invested in a costly processor to power the hardware it has been selling to wireless carriers, which are now building out 5G networks around the world. Customers, though, preferred a cheaper, less energy-intensive version offered by rivals Huawei Technologies Co. and Ericsson AB. Now, with a new chief executive taking over next month, Nokia is scrambling to make up market share lost to those competitors in the wake of the chip mistake. After realizing its blunder in 2018, Nokia replaced the head of its wireless-equipment business with Tommi Uitto, who started a two-year restructuring program that Nokia says is now starting to pay off. He has doubled the research-and-development staff focused on making cheaper chips. "We simply didn't have enough people," Mr. Uitto said. He also diversified from one chip supplier to three: "We got into this trouble by relying on only one." ... » Learn More about Nokia, Hurt by Costly 5G Chip Mistake, Struggles to Catch Huawei
Further boost for Muhyiddin
PETALING JAYA: Two opposition PKR MPs of Julau, Sarawak and Tebrau, Johor, have quit the party to declare their support for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and the Perikatan Nasional government. Julau MP Larry Sng Wei Shein and Tebrau MP Steven Choong Shiau Yoon handed over their statutory declarations (SDs) in support of Perikatan to Muhyiddin yesterday at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre and stated that they will be “government-friendly Independents”. This will give Muhyiddin a further boost of two more MPs in support of him in Dewan Rakyat, as the Prime Minister currently is said to hold a very small majority. In a Facebook post, Muhyiddin said Sng – who was the Sarawak state PKR chief – and Choong handed over their SDs stating their support for him as the Prime Minister for the Perikatan government. “The SDs by Sng and Choong were signed and handed over to me after the convening of the Cabinet meeting in conjunction with the first anniversary of ... » Learn More about Further boost for Muhyiddin
UN chief: World faces ‘existential threats,’ fragilities
In a wide-ranging speech to the World Economic Forum's virtual Davos Agenda meeting, the UN chief said humanity doesn't want to repeat 2020's "tragedy and crisis”. However, he pointed to the many fragilities in today's world, also including lack of consensus on using cyberspace and the growing risks of nuclear and chemical proliferation. "In 2021 we must address these fragilities and put the world on track," Guterres said. On COVID-19, he warned that rich developed nations "are wrong" to think they will be safe if they vaccinate their own people and neglect the developing world. "Vaccines must be seen as global public goods — people's vaccines," he said, and vaccine production must be massively scaled up around the world at affordable prices. Guterres urged major action to address inequalities highlighted by the pandemic. He called for liquidity to avoid debt defaults in many middle-income and least developed countries, debt relief to countries needing it, new ... » Learn More about UN chief: World faces ‘existential threats,’ fragilities
