THOSE who have been charged with a criminal offense before Philippine courts would know that the accuser and plaintiff in those cases is the “People of the Philippines.” But who really represents the people in these cases? Did the people choose the prosecutor who is putting the accused on trial? Was the prosecutor authorized by the people to indict the accused in the first place? These are some of the supposed questions answered by Marlowe Camello, a lawyer practicing in the Philippines and in the United States, in his essay, “The people bypass criminal justice system,” dated Feb. 4, 2021. Camello was admitted to the Philippine bar way back in March 1968. Do I have to believe his essay? Well, I have to do my reading of it with a parallel legal research. ‘Our criminal justice system is unconstitutional’ Camello posits in his essay – “Under Philippine democracy, there are two competing elements of governance namely, politics and justice. At all times, these elements must be ... » Learn More about Who represents the ‘People of the Philippines’?

ASF and the recovery of our local hog industry
The outbreak of the African swine fever (ASF) was first officially recorded in September 2019 in one of the backyard hog raisers in Rodriguez, Rizal. Animal scientists hypothesized that the ASF virus must have originated from leftover food (kaning baboy or swill in the local language) collected by backyard hog raisers from major restaurants and hotels in Metro Manila and then fed to their pigs. From there, the virus spread to Bulacan and other Central Luzon provinces where carcasses of infected animals were sold or used by meat processors. At present, around half of the country’s provinces located in nine regions have been hit by the ASF. Most of those affected are located in the island of Luzon, particularly Central Luzon and the Calabarzon regions which produced 18.2 percent and 17.2 percent, respectively (more than 35 percent), of total hog production in 2019. Impacts on supply and prices As a result, total hog population, which is estimated by the Philippine Statistics ... » Learn More about ASF and the recovery of our local hog industry
BSP to maintain rates amid higher inflation
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is likely to maintain an accommodative monetary-policy setting this year as the country’s headline inflation rose for another month. This is according to analysts from ANZ Research, ING Bank Manila, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. (RCBC), Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and HSBC. ANZ Research economist Kanika Bhatnagar and chief economist Sanjay Mathur believe there is no compelling reason for the central bank to stray from its current monetary policy stance this year. The BSP retained its key interest rates at their record low last month. Overnight borrowing, lending and deposit rates remained at 2.00 percent, 1.50 percent and 2.50 percent, respectively. “However, we are cognizant of a possible ‘second-round’ impact of higher food and fuel inflation on inflation expectations and spillover effects on the prices of other goods and services,” the ANZ economists warned. The Philippine Statistics Authority announced on Friday that ... » Learn More about BSP to maintain rates amid higher inflation
Thailand powers towards a Green Economy
When Somphote Ahunai returned to Bangkok after completing an MBA degree in the US, he had $200 left in the bank. Today the renewable energy and electric vehicle company he founded has a market value of $5.6 billion and testifies to Thailand’s highly successful advance into green and sustainable industries. After initially working as a securities trader, Somphote first entered the renewables business when he started producing biodiesel fuel from a palm oil plantation he had acquired. Then he moved his company, Energy Absolute Pcl, into solar and wind farms, growing to become the nation’s number two publicly-listed electricity supplier. Now Somphote has become a key figure in Thailand’s efforts to steer its highly successful automobile manufacturing industry – the world’s 11th largest – beyond the internal combustion engine era into the design and production of electric vehicles and the lithium-ion batteries and charging stations that will power them. On his journey to becoming an ... » Learn More about Thailand powers towards a Green Economy
Govt raises P463B from RTB issuance
The government has generated P463.3 billion from its latest retail treasury bond (RTB) offering, a portion of which would be used to finance its efforts to help the economy recover from the coronavirus crisis, the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) reported on Thursday. National Treasurer Rosalia de Leon told reporters that the total figure was composed of P411.8 billion in new money and P51.5 billion raised through switch offers. The latest offer, the 25th of its kind made by the BTr, “demonstrates [the] increasing awareness of retail investors [of] government securities, not only as [a] safe and convenient investment, particularly with easy access [to] mobile applications, [but also as a] way of contributing to a strong and inclusive economic rebound,” de Leon said. The three-year bonds were priced at a coupon of 2.375 percent. Small investors were allowed to buy these in minimum denominations of P5,000. To ensure the wider participation of individual investors, the bonds were ... » Learn More about Govt raises P463B from RTB issuance
Confident of rebound despite challenges
Economic managers, along with others monitoring the country’s pulse, remain confident of a healthy rebound this year. This is welcome news, given that gross domestic product (GDP) contracted 9 percent in 2020, mainly because of the response against the coronavirus pandemic that has killed some 2.5 million people worldwide. At The Manila Times economic forum on Friday, Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez 3rd sees a GDP growth of between 6.5 percent and 7.5 percent this year, the same forecast that was announced earlier. Central bank Governor Benjamin Diokno said inflation would be “benign” despite moves to ramp up consumer spending and the cost-push price increases seen recently. Former Finance secretary Jose Isidro Camacho, now the Credit Suisse Asia-Pacific managing director and vice president in Singapore, pointed out that the Philippines stood to benefit from its inclusion in Asean or Association of Southeast Asian Nations. That regional bloc, he added, was expected to grow 6 ... » Learn More about Confident of rebound despite challenges
