China begins high-level forum in Hainan amid Covid-19 measures
BOAO, HAINAN - China kicked off the 20th edition of its high-level Boao Forum on the southern island of Hainan on Sunday (April 18) with a focus on international cooperation amid a global pandemic that has prevented many from travelling to the seaside town. After the virus forced a hiatus last year, this year's event was a far more muted affair with strict coronavirus control measures, and most foreign delegates taking part virtually. Participants had to take two nucleic acid tests before being allowed to attend, while dining and seating arrangements were socially distant. Some 2,600 delegates are still expected in person this year, organisers said, calling it the largest in-person international conference this year. The annual meeting in Boao brings together top Chinese and international leaders, policymakers, company executives and academics to discuss economic and policy issues. Key speakers include a Chinese leader, not identified by the organisers, who will deliver a ... » Learn More about China begins high-level forum in Hainan amid Covid-19 measures
Britain offers all over-50s first COVID-19 shots in boost for PM Johnson
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain has offered all over-50s a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine as the rollout of Moderna's shot in England began on Tuesday, the government said, adding it was on track to give a shot to all adults by the end of July. Britain has seen one of the world's quickest vaccine rollouts, behind only Israel in the proportion of its population receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 shot. The government said it had offered at least one shot to priority cohorts 1 to 9, which include all adults over 50, the clinically vulnerable, and health and social care workers, ahead of a target to do so by Thursday. "We will now move forward with completing essential second doses and making progress towards our target of offering all adults a vaccine by the end of July," Prime Minister Boris Johnson said in a statement. Britain has slowed down the pace of first doses, to ensure people in high-priority groups receive a second dose despite lower vaccine supplies in April than ... » Learn More about Britain offers all over-50s first COVID-19 shots in boost for PM Johnson
Britain stands in ‘full support’ of Czechs after Russian expulsions
LONDON (Reuters) - Britain stands in "full support" of the Czech Republic which foreign minister Dominic Raab said on Sunday had exposed the lengths Russian intelligence services will go to after Prague accused Moscow of involvement in an ammunition depot explosion. Czech police said on Saturday they were searching for two men in connection with serious criminal activity carrying Russian passports in the names of Alexander Petrov and Ruslan Boshirov, and that the men were in the country in days leading up to the blast at the Czech depot in 2014. Those were the aliases used by two Russian military intelligence (GRU) officers who British prosecutors charged with the attempted poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the nerve agent Novichok in 2018. Moscow denied involvement in that incident. "The UK stands in full support of our Czech allies, who have exposed the lengths that the GRU will go to in their attempts to conduct dangerous and malign ... » Learn More about Britain stands in ‘full support’ of Czechs after Russian expulsions
