MANILA, Philippines — The Armed Forces chief, Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, on Wednesday said the military-style formation of about 200 Chinese vessels at a reef within the country’s 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the South China Sea was suspicious, prompting him to direct the Navy to monitor their activities and protect Filipino fishermen in the area. Also on Wednesday, former Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, a critic of China’s maritime policy and actions, said Beijing’s COVID-19 vaccine donations to the country could be the Chinese government’s way of “softening the impact” of its encroachment into the West Philippine Sea. House Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez also expressed concern about the timing of the presence of the Chinese vessels at Julian Felipe Reef off Palawan province, which were discovered on March 7, a week after the arrival of 600,000 doses of the vaccine made by Sinovac Biotech of China. “This sequence of events makes many of us ... » Learn More about PH military chief finds Chinese vessels’ formation suspicious

“James Bond Island” to be assessed for stability after the collapse of similar rock formations
The iconic limestone karst tower and popular tourist site known as “James Bond Island” will be checked for stability following the collapse of similar rock formations. The rock formation in Phang Nga Bay appeared in the 1974 James Bond film “The Man with the Golden Gun.” It’s now known as James Bond Island. It has become a major tourist destination in Thailand and is a stop on many tours. Experts from Thailand’s Department of Mineral Resources will assess the karst tower for stability over the next couple months. Apparently, this is the first detailed assessment of structural viability of James Bond Island. In October, a large chuck of a Krabi karst broke off and collapsed on top of coral reef at a popular dive site. Another rock formation in Mu Koh Phetra National Park in Satun province collapsed in February. The department’s director general Montri Lueng-ingkasoot says rock formations in the South have eroded over the years by thunderstorms, making them vulnerable to ... » Learn More about “James Bond Island” to be assessed for stability after the collapse of similar rock formations
Large format signage printers deliver in good times and bad
Indoor and outdoor posters, billboards, promotions, and ads have formed an essential part of our visual landscape for as long as any of us can remember. Today, however, like most industries, the advertising, and retail sector, which makes up the bulk of the large format signage print jobs, is facing a crisis. The pandemic has drastically reduced footfall in malls, shopping centers, and retail outlets – all the places where marketers seek to influence customers through impactful signage. This has naturally had a serious impact on advertisers’ budgets. Pre-coronavirus, the global ad market was forecasted to grow to $865 billion by 2024, but the pandemic has led to an immediate drop in advertising spend. In accordance, advertising trends are expected to be down with first-quarter revenue data from China and Europe down by 15 percent and 9 percent respectively. It is widely expected by media buyers, planners, and brands that the pandemic will have a bigger impact than the 2008 financial ... » Learn More about Large format signage printers deliver in good times and bad
Solon asks DOH: What’s holding up formation of Cancer Control Council?
MANILA, Philippines — Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas called on the Department of Health (DOH) to explain why the council tasked with formulating the country’s policy response to cancer has yet to be convened two years after the passage of the National Integrated Cancer Control Act (NICCA). Vargas, who is one of the principal authors of the NICCA, expressed concern Wednesday, saying that the cancer control law could become a “dead letter,” or a law that exists but is not enforced due to the failure to form the National Integrated Cancer Control Council. “What’s with the delay? Habang pira-piraso ang implementasyon natin ng NICCA, hindi nabibigyan ng benepisyo ang mga kababayan natin na may kanser na nakasaad sa batas,” Vargas said in a statement. (We are not able to give assistance to our countrymen with cancer if we implement NICCA little by little.) Under the NICCA, the council is mandated to serve as the policymaking, planning, and coordinating body on concerns related to ... » Learn More about Solon asks DOH: What’s holding up formation of Cancer Control Council?
Insufficient time for candidates
I AM expressing the confusion that teachers and students are feeling over the format of the 2021 Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exam papers. In the Bible Knowledge paper, for example, the time allocated is now only two hours when previously it was two and a half hours. Looking at the questions asked in the sample exam paper provided by the Education Ministry, they are far more difficult compared to the old format, yet the time to complete the test has been reduced. The allocation of marks for each section of a question is also not provided. This information is vital for students to determine how much time they should spend on each section. In the recently concluded SPM exam, it is shocking that the Bible Knowledge Paper was held on the same day as Mathematics Paper 1 and 2. The Mathematics papers were held in the morning and Bible Knowledge in the afternoon. Surely the students would be mentally exhausted by then to take on a completely different paper in the afternoon. Students were ... » Learn More about Insufficient time for candidates

Link to Jett’s VDO: https://youtu.be/uJd0qrU9xqE Thailand’s Public Health Minister says the government’s Covid-19 task force will meet today to decide what this year’s Songkran celebrations will look like. While a ban on inter-provincial travel is not expected, the health minister says provincial governors will impose health screening protocols for people moving between provinces. The Ministry of Justice has denied that there were any sinister motives behind prison officers’ late-night attempts to remove 3 detained protest leaders from their cells. Fellow detainee and human rights lawyer, Anon Nampa, claims the multiple attempts to remove the activists, the latest of which took place at 2am, constituted intimidation. However, the ministry insists prison officers were attempting to take the activists for Covid-19 testing only. The fight for a freer web continues
The social media platform Telegram has over 500 million users with over 55 million active every day. Unlike other platforms such as Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and others, you are free to express your opinion there without being cancelled, shadow banned or throttled in searches. There are other platforms also emerging to compete with the giants but there are problems. Bank and payment gateways are facing pressure to no longer support competitors to the giants. The slickness of the platforms is not quite there yet and others like Rumble still have more and longer ads than YouTube. That said I recently watched a longer clip on YouTube and faced 10 ad breaks averaging four minutes apart. Eventually the competitive platforms will grow as more and more opinions are suppressed by the giants. The previously cancelled Parler is back but some are questioning their longevity on a California-based platform. - I'm looking to put together a new computer, specifically for music production and ... » Learn More about The fight for a freer web continues
Pagasa warns of isolated rains due to thunderstorm activity
Image from Pagasa MANILA, Philippines — Isolated rains would still occur despite warmer temperatures brought by the easterlies, as thunderstorm activity is still highly likely, according to state meteorologists. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its Friday weather update that the whole country remains affected by the easterlies, or the warm winds from the Pacific Ocean. However, these easterlies also contribute to the formation of cloud bands that bring short, isolated rain showers in various parts of the country, like what was experienced in some areas within Metro Manila earlier. Pagasa advised the public to continue monitoring the thunderstorm advisories released by their regional offices to know the weather ahead of time. For Saturday, a fair weather condition is expected over Luzon, although isolated rain shower are highly probable by afternoon and night. Temperatures in Metro Manila, Laoag, and Puerto ... » Learn More about Pagasa warns of isolated rains due to thunderstorm activity
