Singapore: 24 new Covid-19 cases reported – one in community; two bodies found in river near Clarke Quay

SINGAPORE, April 18 (The Straits Times/ANN): There were 23 new coronavirus cases confirmed as at Sunday noon (April 18), taking Singapore's total to 60,831. They included 22 imported cases who had been placed on stay-home notice or isolated on arrival in Singapore, said the Ministry of Health (MOH). There was also one community case. No new cases were reported within migrant workers' dormitories. On Saturday, four new cases of locally transmitted Covid-19 infection were reported, one of which involved a national serviceman who was due to attend his in-camp training (ICT) at Nee Soon Camp. Two of the new cases are linked to a National University of Singapore (NUS) senior research fellow from India who was confirmed to have Covid-19 on Thursday. On Saturday, MOH said his colleague - a 31-year-old Swiss woman who is also a senior research fellow at NUS - had caught the virus too. She had interacted with him on April 12 and developed a sore throat on April 15 but did not seek ... » Learn More about Singapore: 24 new Covid-19 cases reported – one in community; two bodies found in river near Clarke Quay

Adults in the room: Lorenzana and the AFP

In his classic work “The Professional Soldier” (1966), American sociologist Morris Janowitz envisioned the future of the military establishment as a “constabulary force,” which is “continuously prepared to act, committed to the minimum use of force, and seeks viable international relations.” Among democracies, Janowitz foresaw a “pragmatic” military—a formidable yet sober, professionalized institution. A decade earlier, political scientist Samuel Huntington made similar reflections in “The Soldier and the State” (1957), where he argued, “Professionalism distinguishes the military officer of today from the warriors of previous ages.” Huntington foresaw the armed forces turning into “a force for caution, sanity, and realism,” whereby the “stronger the military voice, the less the likelihood of conflict.” Even more crucially, he emphasized the importance of an optimal state of civil-military relations, where the civilian leadership has “objective control” through democratic institutions ... » Learn More about Adults in the room: Lorenzana and the AFP

Sea crew member who preliminarily tested positive for B117 strain is Singapore’s sole community case

SINGAPORE: A sea crew member who preliminarily tested positive for the B117 strain is the sole community case among 23 new COVID-19 infections reported in Singapore on Sunday (Apr 18). The remaining 22 cases were imported, said the Ministry of Health (MOH) in its daily update. All were placed on stay-home notice or isolated upon their arrival in Singapore, it added. No new infections were reported in foreign workers' dormitories. COMMUNITY CASE TOOK HIS FIRST DOSE OF COVID-19 VACCINE The sea crew member, a 39-year-old Indonesian national who works on board a bunker tanker, is currently unlinked, said MOH. He had not disembarked from the vessel except to go for COVID-19 testing and vaccination. The man is asymptomatic and was detected when he was tested on Apr 15 as part of the rostered routine testing. His pooled test result came back positive the next day. Identified as Case 62113, the man had tested negative in earlier rostered routine testing, the last of which ... » Learn More about Sea crew member who preliminarily tested positive for B117 strain is Singapore’s sole community case

Messi powers Barcelona to Copa del Rey crown

If Lionel Messi isn’t happy at Barcelona, it was impossible to tell on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) when he scored two goals in another masterful performance to brush aside Athletic Bilbao and win the Copa del Rey. Messi climbed into the tribune after leading the 4-0 win and lifted the trophy high above his head and turned to his team on the pitch below. For his teammates, coach and millions of anxious fans, it was easy to read so much into that broad grin, that vigorous shake of the huge cup. Was Messi finally seeing the folly of ever thinking he could find a better home? Or was the club’s all-time leading scorer relieved that he could give Barcelona at least one more title before saying goodbye? Messi did not mention his future after he received the trophy from Spain’s King Felipe VI, one of the few dignitaries along with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in attendance at a stadium closed to fans due to coronavirus restrictions. Instead, Messi focused on those who were ... » Learn More about Messi powers Barcelona to Copa del Rey crown

Players on 5 more NFL teams say no to in-person work

Players on five more NFL teams will be skipping in-person voluntary workouts because of the pandemic: the Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, the Atlanta Falcons, Miami Dolphins and San Francisco 49ers. The players posted through their union that they are joining 11 other groups who previously said they would not be on hand for the sessions. This weekend players from the other 16 clubs are expected to announce plans. The offseason sessions begin on Monday, and on Wednesday the league sent a memo to all 32 teams saying the first four weeks of the voluntary program will be virtual. The plan is to then transition to in-person work at team facilities. Last year, the offseason programs were all done virtually and training camp was pushed back because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Saying no to in-person workouts earlier this week were players from the Super Bowl champion Buccaneers, Broncos, Seahawks, Giants, Bears, Raiders, Lions, Browns, Steelers and Patriots. The Jets said “many” of their ... » Learn More about Players on 5 more NFL teams say no to in-person work
