The Delhi Assembly elections, to be held early next year, will see a direct fight between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the BJP, as the Congress is not even in the competition, senior AAP leader Sanjay Singh said. Refuting reports that the Congress might emerge as a surprise player in the upcoming Assembly elections and put up a tough fight, as was the case in Haryana, Mr. Singh said the situation in the national capital is “completely different”.Claiming that no one mentions Congress in Delhi, the AAP Rajya Sabha MP said the grand old party cannot be even considered a competitor for the elections in Delhi. In the 2015 Assembly elections, AAP won 67 of the 70 seats and the BJP got the rest, while the Congress drew a blank.“In Delhi, people have seen our work and they are happy with it. They will vote based on that,” he told PTI in an interview. Mr. Singh also ruled out forging pre-poll alliance with the Congress for the Assembly elections. On Sunday afternoon, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sri Lanka’s president-elect Gotabaya Rajapakse on his victory. Rajapakse, brother of former president Mahinda, is known for his hardline outlook during the civil war in the country. The Sri Lankan Press, of course, has been following the election closely, and almost exclusively. And, as is the case in India, it is likely that the drama and euphoria of the change of guard in Colombo will be the subject of editorials and opinion articles for some time to come. On November 15, however, as the campaign was winding down, the press in Sri Lanka was critical of the principal political players. In its editorial, The Island remarked on the tall promises that political parties make while campaigning: “Perhaps, the only thing the presidential candidates did not promise us, during the last few weeks, was rice from the moon or handen haal. They pledged to give us virtually everything else free of charge so much so that one … [Read more...] about View From The Neighbourhood: Sri Lanka polls
As the outcome of Saturday’s presidential polls in Sri Lanka became clear, some voters’ message to the winner Gotabaya Rajapaksa was even clearer. The island’s minority Tamils and Muslims, most of whom live in the Northern and Eastern Provinces, had voted decisively for ruling party candidate Sajith Premadasa, giving him over a million votes — about 80% of the vote share in the regions. In effect, they had rejected Mr. Rajapaksa, a powerful former defence secretary accused of war-crimes — which he has denied — and linked to reactionary anti-Muslim groups.“We respect the mandate of the people of the country and congratulate Mr. Rajapaksa, but we cannot lose sight of the fact that he polled so low in the two provinces. This is an issue we must address, and he must engage with elected representatives of the minorities,” Jaffna legislator and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) spokesman M.A. Sumanthiran said.According to Sri Lanka Muslim Congress … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka polls: How did the minorities vote, and why?
Jaipur: Just days before the deaths of about 15,665 migratory birds was observed at Sambhar Lake, the Rajasthan environment department’s health card for the lake said its water was highly alkaline, saline, of poor quality, and prone to bacterial growth - pointing to damage inflicted by pollution.A Bikaner-based lab at College of Veterinary and Animal Science, Bikane, last Friday said that, on the basis of history, epidemiological observations, clinical symptoms, and post-mortem findings, the most probable diagnosis for the deaths of the birds at Sambhar Lake is avian botulism, a condition caused by a bacterium named clostridium botulinum, which produces dangerous toxins in low-oxygen conditions. On Sunday, the forest department, after conducting combing operations around the 198 square kilometer lake in Jaipur and Nagaur districts, said the death toll has risen to 15,665 since November 10, when first dead birds were spotted. A total of 5,665 … [Read more...] about A month ago, Raj health card found Sambhar Lake to be highly polluted
