By Mark Zwolinski Sports Reporter Sat., Feb. 2, 2019 The Toronto Maple Leafs targeted their struggling power play Saturday morning as they prepared for a game tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins. “We have to be better,” Leafs defenceman Morgan Rielly said at the morning skate. “A lot of the time, it (power play) can be the difference in the game, and last night, we didn’t take advantage of it.” Rielly was speaking about the Leafs 3-2 overtime loss to Detroit Friday in their first game back from an eight day layoff at the all-star break. Toronto’s power play failed to score in five opportunities against the Red Wings. “We talked about that today (Saturday),” Rielly said. Then you move onto Pittsburgh and look at what they do, and go from there.” … [Read more...] about Leafs gear up to face Penguins after Friday’s failed power play

Realtor’s murder ‘smells like a power play’ in Hamilton’s Mafia underworld, ex-undercover cop says
By Peter Edwards Staff Reporter Fri., Feb. 1, 2019 HAMILTON—The murder of a Hamilton realtor with several relatives in traditional organized crime signals a violent restructuring of the city’s underworld, according to a former undercover officer who infiltrated organized crime in southern Ontario. Cece Luppino, 44, was shot shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday at his father’s upscale Hamilton home in a killing investigators are calling “targeted.” “This smells like a power play,” said Paul Manning, a former Hamilton undercover police officer. “I would imagine we see more moves from others on territory which has historically belonged to the Luppino crime family,” he said. The home where Luppino’s body was found is owned by his father Rocco Luppino, 81, son of Giacomo Luppino, who was considered by police to be a major force in Southern Ontario’s underworld before his death in 1987. Putin made Trump wait an hour before their summit in a move that’s both a power play and a backhanded compliment
caption US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland. source Kevin Lamarque/Reuters Russian President Vladimir Putin kept US President Donald Trump waiting for an hour before their summit on Monday in Helsinki. Putin always keeps people waiting as part of what experts interpret as a power play. But while Putin may have slighted Trump by showing up late, an expert told Business Insider it was also a “backhanded compliment,” as he keeps other world leaders waiting way longer. Russian President Vladimir Putin did not invent being late, but he may have perfected it as a power play and means of communication, as US President Donald Trump most likely found out on Monday before the pair’s summit in Helsinki. Putin kept Trump waiting in a guest house for nearly one hour past his planned departure time, Politico’s Annie Karni reported from Helsinki. Putin took off from Russia and landed in nearby … [Read more...] about Putin made Trump wait an hour before their summit in a move that’s both a power play and a backhanded compliment
Success of Leafs’ power play could be limiting opportunities
By Mark Zwolinski Sports Reporter Mon., March 26, 2018 The Maple Leafs are among the best teams in the NHL. They had tied the franchise record for wins in a season entering Monday. They had set a record for consecutive home wins. They’re a solid possession team, and one of the top skating teams in the league. So why do they have such a hard time drawing penalties? Perhaps it’s the fear of their power play. Toronto is fourth in the league with the man advantage, with a 23.3 per cent success rate through the weekend. And that might explain, in part, why the Leafs had spent a league-low 328.49 minutes with the man advantage. The result is their 48 power-play goals were only 14th in the league. “I think it’s still pretty surprising,” Leafs defenceman Travis Dermott said about the power-play time. “We have a lot of speed. You look at a guy like (Kasperi Kapanen), he is very fast and he draws penalties. But I also think our power … [Read more...] about Success of Leafs’ power play could be limiting opportunities
World braces for blowback from Xi lifetime power play in China
BEIJING: President Xi Jinping’s leap toward lifelong rule has largely been met by guarded silence in world capitals as governments try to predict how China’s formidable leader will wield his newfound power on the global stage. The Communist Party’s move to lift presidential term limits will allow Xi to reign supreme as he pushes through an ambitious agenda to turn China into a military and economic superpower by mid-century. “Xi has all this power. But we don’t really know what he wants to use it for,” said Kerry Brown, the director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London. “If it’s to address the challenges that need sorting out in China then that will be a good thing. If not, then it will be deeply problematic.” China is already causing global jitters with its growing assertiveness, from its territorial claims in the South China Sea to the opening of its first overseas military base in the Horn of Africa and … [Read more...] about World braces for blowback from Xi lifetime power play in China
