Manchester City have not yet held their victory parade after edging Liverpool in a thrilling Premier League title race but already they are plotting for next season. The champions are not alone. A huge summer splurge on transfer fees is likely after Premier League spending fell last year, in part due to a short window for clubs to complete their business between the end of the World Cup and a new transfer deadline, which fell before the season began. The Premier League's transfer deadline will again come before most of the rest of Europe, on August 8, meaning clubs cannot afford to waste time. The window for domestic deals opens on Thursday. International transfers can be completed from June 11. AFP Sports looks at where each of the top six are set to strengthen. Manchester City The champions may have claimed a remarkable 198 points over two title-winning campaigns, but Pep Guardiola promised they will come back stronger next season and are likely to invest heavily for a variety … [Read more...] about Premier League set to splash the cash as transfer window opens

MANCHESTER, England: The following is a look back on key moments in the Premier League title race ahead of Sunday's final day.Manchester City will win the title with a victory at Brighton and Hove Albion while Liverpool play Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield, hoping they can pounce on any slip-up from their rivals.Liverpool 0 Manchester City 0, Oct. 7:Both teams went into the game unbeaten from their opening seven matches - Liverpool's six-match winning start had ended with a 1-1 draw at Chelsea, while City had the same record after a 1-1 draw at Wolves in August.City left Anfield feeling they had let two points slip out of their hands, however, as Riyad Mahrez missed an 86th minute penalty. With regular penalty taker Sergio Aguero having been substituted, Algerian Mahrez took the responsibility and blasted the spot kick high over the bar.The result left the pair level with Chelsea on 20 points although City were top on goal difference with Juergen Klopp’s Liverpool side in third … [Read more...] about Key moments in the 2018/19 Premier League title race
Defending champions City have the upper hand as they lead by a point knowing they only have to match Liverpool's result to become the first side in a decade to retain the title. Liverpool have not lifted the league since 1990, but could not have done much more to finally end that wait after posting a club record 94 points with one game to spare. Incredibly the Reds could post the third highest points tally ever in the Premier League with victory against Wolves and still miss out. "Both teams deserve the title. But it can be just one. The team that is going to lose can't have regrets because they have given everything," said City boss Pep Guardiola. Statistically this is the greatest Premier League title race of all-time, but AFP Sports looks at what rivals it for drama from the history books. 2011/12 - Aguero snatches the title It is rare for the title to be won on the final day, even rarer to do it in the final minute of stoppage time in the final game. Should City seal … [Read more...] about Man City v Liverpool: The best ever English title race?
MANCHESTER: For the only eighth time in Premier League history, the title will be decided on the final day of the season with Manchester City well poised to win their second straight championship. A one point advantage over Liverpool means that City will collect their club’s sixth English domestic top flight title if they win at Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday - even if Juergen Klopp’s men beat Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield. Although the lead at the top of the table has changed hands 32 times this season, the bulk of those swaps have been due to the timing of their fixtures. That ends on Sunday with all games kicking off at 1400 GMT as the final blast of tension is packed into 90 minutes. Nothing during the title run-in suggests that either side is about to slip-up. City have won 13 successive Premier League matches and Liverpool their last eight games and both survived real tests of nerves in their penultimate matches. Liverpool grabbed a 3-2 win at Newcastle only … [Read more...] about Epic Premier League title race goes down to final day
LIVERPOOL: The church organist wanted to meet outside Liverpool's Anfield Stadium. Her name is Anne Preston, and she carried the program of a funeral she'd played the day before, as a document of something both ancient and achingly current. She wanted me to see it, so I'd understand how life, death and resurrection are so tied together with football along the banks of the Mersey River. She arrived with her husband, meeting me between the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand and the Kop, the mighty Liverpool Kop. As he went over to sort his tickets for the first leg of the Champions League semifinal in Barcelona, she produced the programme and told me about a musical request from the family. The mom made the request herself. To honor her son, whose funeral program had Anfield on the front and the club crest on the back, she wanted Anne to subtly work in "You'll Never Walk Alone" during the Mass. It's a familiar request to Anne, and to every funeral director and organist in Liverpool. At the crematorium … [Read more...] about What a Premier League title would mean for Liverpool
