WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump lashed out at the World Bank on Friday, blaming the international financial institution for lending money to China. "Why is the World Bank loaning money to China? Can this be possible? China has plenty of money, and if they don't, they create it. STOP!" Trump wrote on Twitter. The US President was reiterating a position long held by his administration, including David Malpass when he was a treasury department official prior to his election as the current head of the World Bank. Trump's message on the World Bank was also echoed by his treasury secretary, Steven Mnuchin, who told a house of representatives committee on Thursday that the United States "has objected" to the institution's multi-year programme of loans and projects in China. That programme was nonetheless adopted on Thursday. It plans to reduce its lending to China. The programme "reflects the evolution of our relationship with China," Martin Raiser, World Bank country director … [Read more...] about Donald Trump calls on World Bank to stop lending to China
SEOUL: South Korea's President Moon Jae-in and US President Donald Trump agreed during a phone conversation to maintain dialogue with the nuclear-armed North Korea, Seoul said Saturday, with the two allies noting the situation had become "grave". Denuclearisation negotiations have been at a standstill since a summit in Hanoi broke up in February and pressure is rising as an end-of-year deadline to offer concessions, set by Pyongyang for Washington, approaches. The 30-minute talk was the first conversation between the US President and the South Korean leader since they met at the UN General Assembly in New York in September. "The two leaders shared an assessment that the current situation on the Korean peninsula is grave," said Ko Min-jung, spokeswoman of the South Korea's presidential office. "They agreed momentum for dialogue to achieve prompt results from denuclearisation negotiations should be continued," she went on to say, adding that Trump had requested the call. The discussion … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and Moon Jae-in discuss maintaining talks with North Korea: Seoul

'As he has no executive track record, so far, he is all talk and hence essentially a braggart and a bigot.' Photograph: Ricardo Moraes/Reuters Jair Bolsonaro's election as Brazil's next president demonstrates once again that democratic elections can not only yield unpredictable results but lead to undesirable consequences! Such scepticism about democracy in a self-proclaimed political liberal like me may be frowned upon. But after the bitterness of the Brexit verdict, the chaos caused by the Trump win, and some other alarming fallouts in Europe, there is reason for worrying about electoral outcomes. What has happened in Brazil, the world's fifth largest country in size as well as in population, and Latin America's dominant nation reinforces this feeling. Some readers in this space may recall many of my columns from a decade back romanticising Brazil and extolling its many virtues. I was … [Read more...] about Now a Trump clone in Brazil!
