Apple is reportedly closing a security loophole on iPhones that will prevent police from accessing them

June 14, 2018 businessinsider Leave a Comment

Apple is changing the default settings on iPhones, stopping people from exploiting a security loophole to gain access to devices using the charging and data port. Police sometimes use this loophole to gain access to devices. Apple has butted heads with law enforcement about unlocking iPhones before. In 2016, it refused to help the FBI break into the phone of the San Bernardino gunman. Apple is reportedly changing the default settings on iPhones to close a loophole which can be used to access locked phones via the charging and data port. The software update, reported by The New York Times, will disable the iPhone’s Lightning port an hour after the phone is locked. After that, a user will be able to charge the phone, but unable to transfer any data to or from the device unless the passcode is entered. The update will block anyone using a GrayKey device, which costs $15,000 (£11,000) and can be … [Read more...] about Apple is reportedly closing a security loophole on iPhones that will prevent police from accessing them

Police raid offices of ex-Special Branch officer in cosmetics crackdown

May 7, 2018 nationmultimedia Leave a Comment

Santhana last week tried to prevent police from conducting an in-depth search of shops at New Don Muang Market, which had become the focus of a probe after police received reports that unlicensed cosmetics and food supplements were being sold there. Police said they would file charges against Santhana for allegedly insulting an officer and allegedly attempting to obstruct the raid.  A fifth search of the market on Sunday by hundreds of police and officials led to the seizure of more than 300,000 items of allegedly substandard products. Police announced they will lay five charges against the market operator, including charges related to encroaching on the Prem Prachakorn Canal and modifying buildings without permission. Although the market operator has leased a large plot of land from the Treasury Department, an inspection by authorities revealed the market operator had also constructed a building that overlaps the adjacent canal. The operator has been ordered to remove the … [Read more...] about Police raid offices of ex-Special Branch officer in cosmetics crackdown

Narcotics suppression police have raided the Bangkok house of a suspected drug boss, who is a registered taxi motorcycle driver, seized two cars, 2 million Baht and a bank account book with transactions totalling some 60 million Baht. Jirat Pensophon was arrested early Tuesday morning at a house in the Casa Ville Rajapruek housing estate on Rajapruek Road in Nonthaburi’s Pak Kret district. The operation was led by Narcotics Suppression Bureau commissioner Lt-General Sommai Kongwisaisuk. Sommai said an arrest warrant had been issued for Jirat, who also allegedly collaborated with other people to launder drug money. He says Jirat was suspected of being a drug-ring boss based on information police had received from suspects arrested last year when police seized one million methamphetamine pills and 400 kilograms of crystal meth. Sommai alleges Jirat ran the operation using cellphones with prepaid SIM cards that he had migrants register. After a SIM card was used, it was destroyed to … [Read more...] about Narcotics police nab Bangkok drug kingpin
