Hong Kong: Some anti-government protesters trapped inside a Hong Kong university on Wednesday tried to flee through the sewers, where one student said she saw snakes, but firemen prevented further escape bids by blocking a manhole into the system. Reuters witnesses said fewer than 100 protesters remained inside the Polytechnic University, surrounded 24 hours a day by riot police, after more than 1,000 were arrested beginning late on Monday. Some surrendered while others were held during escape attempts that included trying to clamber down ropes to waiting motorbikes on Monday night, with protesters throwing petrol bombs and police responding with tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon. "I told my mom when the police started storming that I wasn’t leaving. I told her: 'I want a democratic society and you are not willing to stand up and fight for it',” Jack, 21, an accounting and finance student, said on Wednesday. “She wrote back with a crying emoji,” he … [Read more...] about Hong Kong Students’ Escape Through ‘Smelly’ Sewer Filled With Snakes, Cockroaches Thwarted

SHANGHAI: The U.S. House of Representatives has passed legislation to back protesters in Hong Kong and send a warning to China about human rights, sending two bills to the White House where President Donald Trump is expected to sign them into law. Mass protests for more democracy and autonomy have roiled Hong Kong for more than five months, with escalating violence and fears that China will ratchet up its response to stop the civil disobedience. The "Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act", which the Senate passed unanimously on Tuesday, would put the former British colony's special treatment by the United States under tighter scrutiny linked to Hong Kong's autonomy from Beijing. A second bill, which the Senate also approved unanimously on Tuesday, would ban the export of certain crowd-control munitions to Hong Kong authorities. What next? The two bills have been sent to the White House, where U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to sign them into law. Once that happens, the … [Read more...] about US legislation on Hong Kong: What does it mean?
China stocks extended losses for a second straight session on Thursday, as a fresh dispute between Washington and Beijing over Hong Kong stoked concerns that an interim trade deal could be delayed. The blue-chip CSI300 index fell 0.5 per cent, to 3,889.60, while the Shanghai Composite index shed 0.3 per cent to 2,903.64. Completion of a "phase one" U.S.-China trade deal could be pushed into next year, trade experts and people close to the White House said, as Beijing presses for more extensive tariff rollbacks, and the Trump administration counters with heightened demands of its own. In a dinner speech in Beijing on Wednesday, Vice Premier Liu He said he was "cautiously optimistic" on a "phase one" deal, Bloomberg News said, citing people who attended the event ahead of a forum organised by Bloomberg LP. The crackdown on anti-government protests in Hong Kong may also complicate the completion of a deal. The Hong Kong issue is definitely a negative factor in the trade talks, … [Read more...] about China stocks down for 2nd day on Sino-US spat over Hong Kong
Beijing: A 12-year-old boy became the youngest protester to be convicted in the six-month-long pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong as a court in the former British colony reserved orders to place him under counselling and supervision for up to three years. The probation order, if clamped, would also leave the minor with a criminal record, Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Thursday. Since the pro-democracy protests began about six months ago over the Hong Kong government's attempts to bring an Extradition Bill, this round of protests have caught the attention of China and the world for their mass public participation, specially the youth and students. The demonstrations started peacefully, but the situation changed soon with students, including those in the age group of 12 to 16-years, displaying raw power in destroying public property. The protests are continuing even though the government has withdrawn the Extradition Bill. Over 4,500 people mostly students have … [Read more...] about Hong Kong Protests: 12-year-old Boy Who Vandalised Police Station Youngest Person to Be Convicted So Far
