A back-to-school reno by a DIY family
By Elaine Smith Special to the Star Sat., April 14, 2018 With their children grown and out on their own, Katie Saunders and Simon White moved back to Toronto in 2015 and planned to permanently settle in the city. Instead, they’ve found themselves, along with nine-year-old cockapoo Zoey, restoring an old schoolhouse in Marlbank, Ont., about 225 km east of Toronto. “I couldn’t deal with the idea of condo fees: paying off your mortgage and still having fees for the rest of your life,” said Saunders. But he missed working on the restoration projects their Victorian home in Sunderland had demanded. Soon, the couple began looking for a property within a few hours’ drive of Toronto. … [Read more...] about A back-to-school reno by a DIY family

Family of Mississauga teen in NYC terror plot says FBI operated overzealous sting operation
By Jaren Kerr Staff Reporter Michelle Shephard National Security Reporter Wed., March 21, 2018 There are two different stories about Abdulrahman El Bahnasawy, the 20-year-old Mississauga man who faces life in prison for plotting to blow up New York’s Times Square and subway system. It was not members of the so-called Islamic State who devised the bombing plot, they argue, but the FBI who operated an overzealous sting operation, a frequent criticism of the American police force since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. “Obviously, the Islamic State are horrible people and I think everybody sees them as the enemy,” said El Bahnasawy’s sister, Basma, in an interview with … [Read more...] about Family of Mississauga teen in NYC terror plot says FBI operated overzealous sting operation
