Kochi : In a pluralist society like India, which accepts secularism as the basic norm in governing secular activities, including education, there cannot be any difficulty in imparting religious instruction or study based on religious pluralism. What is prohibited is exclusivism, observed Kerala High Court on Friday as it directed the state government to direct private schools to desist from imparting religious studies without the government's permission. Justice A Muhamed Mustaque upheld the closure of a school in Thiruvananthapuram which admitted only Muslim students saying the school imparted religious instruction exclusively following Islam and that cannot be permitted. MUMBAI: In a reprieve to R Venkataramanan, managing trustee of Tata Trusts, the Bombay High Court has set aside the process issued against him by a metropolitan magistrate’s court in a defamation complaint filed by Shapoorji Pallonji Group. The press note issued on May 30, 2018 by Venkataramanan was per-se not defamatory, Justice Mridula Bhatkar observed. “I am of the view that the words which are used in the press note are not at all defamatory,” Justice Bhatkar said in her order that was uploaded late on Wednesday. “They are moderate and temperate. They do not invite contempt, ridicule or hatred against the persons mentioned in the press note and much less the complainant,” she added. The Telangana High Court directed the organisers to conclude the meeting by 9.15 pm on Saturday. There will be no hoisting of the Tricolour. Following a litigation raised by an activist named Uma Mahender, the High Court imposed restrictions on the event to be held at Khilwat Grounds near the historic monument Charminar.
