Deputy Nationals leader Bridget McKenzie was arguing today for Australia Day to stay on January 26 when she put her foot in it. “That is when the course of our nation changed forever. When Captain Cook stepped ashore,” Senator McKenzie told Sky News on Tuesday. “And from then on, we’ve built an incredibly successful society, best multicultural society in the world.” Actually, Australia Day marks the arrival of the First Fleet in January 1788, which was commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip. Captain Cook had been dead for nine years at that point. There have been calls to change the date, which many Indigenous Australians refer to as Invasion Day. But Prime Minister Scott Morrison is calling for another day to recognise indigenous Australians. The inaugural trip of India’s first semi-high speed train, Vande Bharat Express, was flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the New Delhi railway station on Friday.The train, named ‘Train 18’ at the concept stage, is a plush 16-coach, air-conditioned, self-propelled train set and doesn’t have a locomotive.The express will ply between Delhi and Varanasi, with halts at Kanpur and Allahabad. It will complete the 780-km journey in eight hours, slicing off 180 minutes from the current travel time of 11-and-a-half hours. This is India’s fastest train to date, capable of commercial speeds up to 160 km per hour. On the Delhi-Varanasi route, however, its top speed would be restricted to 130 km per hour. The train will start commercial operations on this route on February 17. Southern Railway general manager John Thomas inspected different facilities of the Palakkad division and reviewed the division’s performance here on Friday. Principal chief commercial manager Priyamvada Viswanadhan and principal chief operations manager Neenu Ittyerah and divisional railway manager Pratap Singh Shami accompanied Mr. Thomas during the examination.The team inspected facilities of the Palakkad-Pollachi section and the Palakkad-Shoranur-Nilambur section. They checked running rooms, crew lobby and passenger amenities at Palakkad Junction. Major bridges, level crossings and curves were also examined. Mr. Thomas unveiled a heritage crane at Pollachi station.
