New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday decided to put on hold the elections for local bodies in nine new districts, carved out from four existing ones, in Tamil Nadu for complying with legal formalities such as delimitation and reservation in four months. A bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) S A Bobde considered the suggestion put forward by the Tamil Nadu government that it was willing to put on hold the local body polls in the nine districts for complying with legal formalities such as a fresh delimitation exercise and for deciding the issue of reservation for women and SC/ST candidates. The bench, also comprising justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant, said, "There shall be no legal impediment in holding the elections in the rest nine districts of Tamil Nadu." It directed the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission to conduct the delimitation exercise and other formalities afresh and conclude them in four months. The Supreme Court on Friday directed Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct civic polls in the state, except in the newly-constituted nine districts.With the apex court partially clearing the decks for local body elections, the SEC stated it would release a new notification to conduct the polls.Earlier, the SEC had announced that civic polls would be held for rural seats of local bodies on December 27 and 30. DMK welcomes Supreme Court verdict on local body polls
DMK president M K Stalin on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court verdict permitting the State to hold elections to rural local bodies in 27 districts excluding the nine reconstituted districts, where the delimitation process has not been completed. But he maintained that conducting polls in other districts would lead to confusion.“The judgement is historic, as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami has said. The verdict also safeguards the principles of democracy. I welcome the judgement on behalf of the DMK,” Mr. Stalin told reporters at Anna Arivalayam, the DMK’s headquarters in Chennai.Mr. Stalin also reiterated that the DMK did not go to the Court to stop the elections, but to ensure that they are held by following all legal procedures. Tamil Nadu local body polls: BJP to ride on AIADMK’s shoulders to gain a foothold
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had an unsuccessful outing in the Lok Sabha elections in Tamil Nadu earlier this year, is eyeing the upcoming local body polls to make inroads into the southern state.It is looking to ride on the shoulders of its ally—the state’s ruling All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)—to register a win in the local body polls.The BJP had contested the Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Coimbatore, Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga seats in the parliamentary elections but failed to win any of the seats.Before this, the national party won the Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat in 2014.
