Gordon slams unfair motorbike dealers in inquiry into killings

Sen. Richard Gordon decries the steep interest rates imposed on installment payment for motorcycles by ordinary Filipinos. He says some unscrupulous dealers charge up to 36 percent interest on monthly amortization and, in lieu of official receipts and certificates of registration, they make buyers sign a promissory note indicating they are paying for the motorcycles they are driving. INQUIRER PHOTO / RICHARD A. REYES Irregularities in the sale of motorcycles in the country are contributing to the rising number of murders committed by killers on motorbikes and these are being tolerated by transportation regulators, Sen. Richard Gordon said on Thursday. Gordon made the statement at the resumption of the inquiry of the blue ribbon committee, which he heads, into the unabated killings by motorcycle-riding assailants and the failure of government agencies to fully implement Republic Act No. 11235, or the Motorcycle Crime Prevention Act. Citing records compiled by his staff since Jan. ... » Learn More about Gordon slams unfair motorbike dealers in inquiry into killings

Gordon hits motorcycle dealers for not releasing papers to installment buyers

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Richard Gordon lashed out on Monday at motorcycle dealers for allegedly refusing or delaying the release of original receipts (OR) and certificates of registration (CR) to buyers paying on installment. During a Senate blue ribbon committee hearing, Gordon said his office had been receiving complaints from consumers, who said dealers refuse to release their OR and CR until they had made full payment. The senator lamented the practice, which he said enables dealers to resell the motorcycles as demonstration units. Further, he questioned why in some cases consumers were made to sign a promissory note, which he said would allow dealers to repossess the motorcycle. “When [the buyer] can’t pay, the motorcycle could be pulled out while he’s taking a bath at home. The dealer would pull out the motorcycle,” Gordon said in Filipino. “This is one technique — promissory note. They will just pull out [the motorcycle] without resistance [from the buyer],” he ... » Learn More about Gordon hits motorcycle dealers for not releasing papers to installment buyers

Philippine police to look into government admission of drug war failures

MANILA - Philippine police said on Thursday (Feb 25) they were looking into a government review of thousands of killings in the country’s “war on drugs”, after the justice minister made an unprecedented admission to the United Nations of widespread police failures. Human Rights Watch described Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra’s video statement on Wednesday (Feb 24) as an “astounding disclosure”. Guevarra said police had in many cases failed to examine weapons and crime scenes after officers had shot dead suspected drug dealers. Guevarra’s comments to the Human Rights Council mark the first time the government has publicly questioned its own narrative that the thousands of people killed in President Rodrigo Duterte’s drugs war were all armed and had resisted arrest. Activists accuse the government of turning a blind eye to systematic executions and cover-ups by police in a crackdown Duterte once warned could result in 100,000 deaths. Police deny allegations of murder. Rights ... » Learn More about Philippine police to look into government admission of drug war failures

PDEA, PNP may have been set up – Lacson

SOLE PROBER A team from the National Bureau of Investigation returns on Saturday to the scene of the Feb. 24 “misencounter” between members of the Philippine National Police and agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency near a Quezon City shopping mall. —NIÑO JESUS ORBETA MANILA, Philippines — Did the government’s antinarcotics agents fall prey to a two-faced tipster? Sen. Panfilo Lacson on Saturday said the answer to this question may well explain the shootout between members of the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) outside a mall in Quezon City, raising the possibility that the informant could have “set up” the gunfight. “It was suspected that the PDEA and the QCPD (Quezon City Police District) operatives had the same asset. So apparently, they had been played,” Lacson told the Inquirer, citing information relayed to him by his own source. Should you trade-in or sell your car? Which offers you the best price?

A car can be one of your most significant assets in Singapore. Buying and selling are always significant decisions and you should always pick the option that gives you the best value. It’s easy to know when your car is due for an upgrade, but choosing how to dispose of it can be rather tricky. Most car owners often choose the ‘trade-In’ route due to the sheer convenience. However, does it actually give you the better deal? In this article, we’ll explore both the ‘trade-In’ or ‘sell’ options to see which gives you the best price for your car. Trade-in How does trading-in work? Trade-in happens when you sell your old car with the intent to purchase a new car, usually through the same dealer. The dealer will buy back your old car from you and use this amount to offset your new car's purchase. A scenario may occur when the dealer offers a higher trade-in value to aid you with the new car's down payment. This is called ‘overtrading’. Here is an example: the new car you wish ... » Learn More about Should you trade-in or sell your car? Which offers you the best price?

Senate resource persons face contempt threats due to technical glitches

MANILA, Philippines— A former transportation official was almost cited for contempt during a Senate hearing on Tuesday due to technical glitches. As the  Senate blue ribbon committee tackled the old problems on license plates,  Senator Richard Gordon could be seen losing his temper as he was having difficulty communicating with some resource persons during the panel’s online hearing. “Secretary Lotilla, naka-mute kayo. Please don’t tempt me, I will hold you in contempt so help me God,”  committee chairman Gordon said,  referring to former Transportation Undersecretary Jose Perpetuo Lotilla. After repeated attempts to get Lotilla to the hearing, Gordon directed the committee to prepare an arrest order to compel the former official to appear before the panel. “There’s no excuse why he will not appear. He said he was here. Make ready orders for contempt that he be arrested to appear here,” he said,  addressing panel director-general Rodolfo Quimbo.
