Video Player Close BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- When Mao Zedong stood on Tian'anmen Rostrum in Beijing to declare the birth of New China in 1949, a Herculean task stood before him and the Communist Party of China (CPC) that he led: feeding and clothing 540 million Chinese people, nearly 90 percent of whom lived in rural areas. "Poverty is not socialism," "socialism means eliminating poverty," and "we must keep abreast of the times; that is the purpose of our reform," said Deng Xiaoping, the visionary chief architect of China's reform and opening-up which began in 1978 when the country's incidence of rural poverty was 97.5 percent. Eradicating poverty is a war China must win, with the hardest and most arduous tasks lie in the country's rural areas and poverty-stricken regions. In 2020, all of China's nearly 100 million rural residents living below the current poverty line shook off poverty after eight years of arduous efforts. Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters
New Delhi: With a goal of promoting local manufacturing, India’s new budget tripled to 15 per cent the duty on imported solar lanterns , while the duty on solar inverters would rise from 5 per cent to 20 per cent. The off-grid solar industry, which already saw a 10 per cent decline in solar lantern sales in 2019-2020, is bracing for an ever bigger hit because of the new tariffs. As a result, off-grid industry executives are calling for a more measured approach that accounts for the current gap in quality local production while ensuring that India’s rural poor are protected from expected price hikes until that gap is filled. “We understand that the increase in duties has the undesirable effect of making certain products in the market expensive for end-customers,” said Piyush Mathur, board member of CLEAN, a trade group representing over 200 distributed renewable energy companies. “However, the new duty structure also offers our member companies an opportunity to build and ... » Learn More about Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

Student Entrepreneur Helps Migrant Mothers
January 27, 2014 08:32 Recent statistics show that 1.5 million to 2 million foreigners live in Korea, accounting for over 3 percent of the nation's population. A range of programs are being offered to help them better adapt to life in Korean society. In a bid to help immigrant families, university student Ji Byung-ju came up with a unique idea early this year to provide immigrant mothers with postnatal services from midwives of the same nationality. "Despite the rapid increase in multicultural families, Korean society still does not give them enough care and attention," Ji said. "I wanted to help them start a new life in a foreign country, and while I was doing research with them I found that immigrant women find it a hard and lonely experience giving birth in a completely foreign environment." Ji decided it would be more comforting if they had midwives of the same nationality. He also learned women from different cultures traditionally have different nutritious food ... » Learn More about Student Entrepreneur Helps Migrant Mothers

IIT Madras Researchers identify a Sustainable, High-Yielding Alternative Source for Anti-Cancer Drug Camptothecin
CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Researchers have identified a sustainable and high-yielding alternative source for the anti-cancer drug Camptothecin . This novel microbial fermentation process can be an economically-efficient method of production to fulfill the market demand at a large scale. Topotecan and Irinotecan are two widely used anticancer drugs, which are produced by using Camptothecin as the lead molecule. More than a dozen derivatives and conjugates of Camptothecin are under various stages of clinical trials for anti-cancer applications. Camptothecin is an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata and the Indian tree Nothapodytes nimmoniana. Nearly 1,000 tons of plant material is required to extract just one ton of Camptothecin. Due to extensive overharvesting to meet the market demand both these plants are now critically endangered. The N. nimmoniana population has seen more than a 20% decline in the last decade alone.
