OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future

New Delhi: Soaring fuel prices , environmental awareness and the new vehicle scrappage policy announced in Budget 2021 are likely to encourage a gradual shift to electric vehicles in the coming years. Personal vehicles make up more than 90 percent of registered motor-vehicles in India, with nearly 162.6 million two-wheelers sold between 2011-2020. Hence, for the nation to realize its EV vision, facilitating its uptake among individual consumers – both four- and two-wheeler users – is as important as electrifying commercial fleets. However, a critical obstacle to boosting individual uptake today, is the lack of charging infrastructure at convenient locations. With studies showing that about 50-80 percent of private charging happens at homes and another 15-25 percent at the workplace, it is essential to equip our buildings with the necessary infrastructure for EV charging . Aiming for the low-hanging fruits Charging points in buildings will need to primarily cater to ... » Learn More about OPINION: Prepping our buildings today for an EV-ready future

China Focus: Is China’s poverty cure replicable?

Video Player Close BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- When Mao Zedong stood on Tian'anmen Rostrum in Beijing to declare the birth of New China in 1949, a Herculean task stood before him and the Communist Party of China (CPC) that he led: feeding and clothing 540 million Chinese people, nearly 90 percent of whom lived in rural areas. "Poverty is not socialism," "socialism means eliminating poverty," and "we must keep abreast of the times; that is the purpose of our reform," said Deng Xiaoping, the visionary chief architect of China's reform and opening-up which began in 1978 when the country's incidence of rural poverty was 97.5 percent. Eradicating poverty is a war China must win, with the hardest and most arduous tasks lie in the country's rural areas and poverty-stricken regions. In 2020, all of China's nearly 100 million rural residents living below the current poverty line shook off poverty after eight years of arduous efforts. The historical feat of eradicating absolute ... » Learn More about China Focus: Is China’s poverty cure replicable?

Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

New Delhi: With a goal of promoting local manufacturing, India’s new budget tripled to 15 per cent the duty on imported solar lanterns , while the duty on solar inverters would rise from 5 per cent to 20 per cent. The off-grid solar industry, which already saw a 10 per cent decline in solar lantern sales in 2019-2020, is bracing for an ever bigger hit because of the new tariffs. As a result, off-grid industry executives are calling for a more measured approach that accounts for the current gap in quality local production while ensuring that India’s rural poor are protected from expected price hikes until that gap is filled. “We understand that the increase in duties has the undesirable effect of making certain products in the market expensive for end-customers,” said Piyush Mathur, board member of CLEAN, a trade group representing over 200 distributed renewable energy companies. “However, the new duty structure also offers our member companies an opportunity to build and ... » Learn More about Off-grid solar industry bracing for impact of import duty hike for lanterns and inverters

Clay takes over Hyderabad’s highways

Picnickers from Hyderabad are making the most of the relatively cool weekend mornings, venturing out on day trips to Vikarabad, Warangal and Siddipet. En route, they are waylaid on the highways by a motley bunch of vendors seeking to lure them with clay cookware — pots, pans, glasses and bottles brought from Kota in Rajasthan. The highways that are usually dotted with fresh vegetable and fruit sellers are now proving to be a good market spot for the clay pot sellers; they cleverly position themselves close to fruit and vegetable vendors for easy access. Makeshift ‘shops’ on open mini trucks display their wares on the footpath, to catch the attention of motorists. The clay utensils include pots in black and brown, ‘cook and serve’ curry pots as well as pans with heat resistant handles, tava for rotis, teacups and drinking water bottles, all priced from ₹100 to ₹700. Rajnath Singh, a 35-year-old seller says the bottles are a favourite with those travelling in autorickshaws, as they ... » Learn More about Clay takes over Hyderabad’s highways

All animals suffer, not just cows

'I do not agree with what you eat, but I'll defend to death, at the cost of the animal's death unfortunately, your right to eat it.' Banning beef, says Zelda Pande, is about imposing fundamentalism in everyday life. A long-standing colleague has spent the last year faithfully visiting every restaurant across Mumbai, big or small, that serves beef steak. His logic when I asked him last year: Modi's government is coming. Very soon we won't get to eat steak anymore. While I was amused then at his logic, I could only be surprised by his foresight when I read, bemused, that beef can no longer be consumed in Maharashtra. Being a vegetarian -- I am a seriously staunch animal lover and definitely not a proponent of Hindutva-style shakahari-ism -- I am caught in a conflict. It makes scant difference to me if they stop slaughtering just cows. It is just one poor, luckless creature among many being brutally slaughtered in a bad system. What is so cool about the 50,000th MG Hector SUV? Well, it is manufactured by an all-women crew

New Delhi: MG Motor India has manufactured its 50,000th Hector with an all-women crew in Gujarat’s Vadodara. The initiative has created a new benchmark while celebrating ‘Diversity’ – one of the core pillars of the automaker – as women led the end-to-end production. In this first-of-its-kind development, women-only teams were involved in panel-pressing of sheet metal and welding to painting jobs as well as carrying out post-production test runs, the company said in a statement. MG Motors said that it aims to achieve 50% gender diversity in its organization in the future and pave the way for a balanced workforce. Since 2018, MG has hired many female associates in its manufacturing facility. MG’s Halol manufacturing facility is further equipped with Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) and Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for various workshops. ‘We are only saying don’t eat what we consider sacred’

'Muslims and Christians should understand that the cow is sacred to us. It is not good for health. They should eat something else.' 'Our mission is cow development. We want to produce rivers of milk. The cow should be sacred among people. It should be the national animal.' Singh, below, left , spoke to A Ganesh Nadar/ Rediff.com about his crusade to save the "sacred" cow.
