By Tess Kalinowski Real Estate Reporter Thu., Sept. 20, 2018 Online U.S. real estate giant Zillow has struck a listings deal with a second Canadian company, but has not yet announced a launch date for posting those properties on Zillow.com. The company, which has indicated before that it would be launching Canadian listings later this year, would only say that they “will be featured on Zillow.com soon.” Right at Home Realty, a Toronto-based brokerage with about 1,800 listings, will provide a direct feed of its listings when Zillow launches in Canada, the company announced Thursday. The two have been talking since about June, said Right at Home chair and CEO Ron Peddicord. That is when Century 21 Canada announced it had struck a similar agreement with Zillow to provide its 26,300 national listings to the site. “We’re partnering with them for a Canadian launch. This isn’t about putting Canadian listings in the U.S.,” he said. … [Read more...] about U.S. real estate giant Zillow adds to its Canadian listings ahead of launch

By Tess Kalinowski Real Estate Reporter Wed., Sept. 5, 2018 In the seven years the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) was losing its fight to keep the selling prices of property offline, it effectively delayed an incursion from the kind of tech-based disrupters that have rattled the taxi and travel industries. With sold data on its way to virtually every real estate site in the Toronto area, if not the country, some believe the door is finally open to a new breed of competitor that will challenge the traditional agent-client business model. Last month, the Supreme Court dismissed TREB’s application to appeal a Competition Tribunal decision that ruled that web-based brokerages — known in the industry as virtual office websites (VOWs) — should be allowed to publish sold data on their websites. All consumers should need in order to access that information online, said the tribunal, was a password such as the one they would use to shop for … [Read more...] about Will publishing sold data open the door to real estate disrupters?
By Ellen Roseman Personal Finance Columnist Tues., Aug. 21, 2018 Brenda Beam bought a voucher for painting services at Buytopia.ca, which offers daily deals for local goods and services. The painter set a date, but later called to say he couldn’t do the work because Buytopia still owed him money for vouchers redeemed by other customers. Beam asked Buytopia for a refund since her voucher couldn’t be used. Moreover, she had been billed for two vouchers ($88.50) when she had only purchased one. “Their reply, the first of many, confirmed the refund would come ‘shortly.’ They also acknowledged they had double-billed me. I wrote, again and again, and each time they promised to refund me shortly,” Beam told me. Frustrated by the wait — she paid last August and was still waiting in June — she asked her credit card issuer for a refund. But she was out of luck because of a time limit of 60 to 120 days to dispute an … [Read more...] about Do your research before using online retailers
A NEW Thai-language website full of literary fiction debuted last Monday – and immediately crashed because fan interest overloaded its server. The founders got the technical glitch resolved and more than 4,000 people could resume reading. It’s a number that’s bound to rise much further. The key founders of AnOwl are three novelists who were already popular under the pennames Piyaporn Sakkasem, Pongsakorn and Kingchat. Piyaporn – real name Nantaporn Sarntigasem – is the author of such hit titles as “Tawan Tor Saeng”, “Sai See Plueng” and “Rak Nakara”. The many fiction-friendly magazines that have folded in recent years left writers and readers without a “meeting point”, she says. “The magazines provided a stage for writers to present their work under the care of professional editors. The readership hasn’t declined, but the consumer’s media-consumption behaviour changed. We … [Read more...] about Fiction flows online
