Owners of hotels in Pattaya have claimed officials have demanded kickbacks if they want their hotels to be chosen as covid-19 quarantine centres. They have urged Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration to look into the issue. Since the hoteliers accusations officials were quick to deny any involvement by legitimate state authorities. Government spokeswoman Narumon Pinyosinwat said on Saturday that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha had ordered an investigation into the claim. He vowed to take tough action against wrongdoers taking advantage of people and hotel operators during the covid-19 pandemic. Dr Panprapa Yongtrakul, assistant spokeswoman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, also said that the centre had never sent anyone to coordinate and demand “change” for turning a place into a state quarantine facility. How Julian Felipe Reef brouhaha impacts on CPP-NPA-NDF insurgency
A NUMBER of speculations has surfaced from the continuing controversy on the Julian Felipe Reef in the South China Sea. Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana appears the most persistent in hammering on the issue in the media so that one sector believes the incident has given him the opportunity to craft his political designs, i.e., running for president in 2022. A popular radio commentator, who pretends to authority on diplomatic matters, confided to me recently that it is all about the procurement by the Armed Forces of the Philippines of allegedly five patrol boats from the United States. Considering that driving away the Chinese from the South China Sea has been America’s magnificent obsession, hyping the incident in the media becomes an effective bargaining leverage in the deal. In other words, make it appear that China is intruding into Philippine territory, which the US does not want to happen, and with the Philippines combating such intrusion, it can get those needed patrol ... » Learn More about How Julian Felipe Reef brouhaha impacts on CPP-NPA-NDF insurgency

Duterte: More Covid deaths amid vaccine shortage
President Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday said he sees more deaths from the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) because of the global vaccine shortage. “There is no sufficient supply to inoculate the world, matagal pa ‘to (this will be long),” the President said in his public address. “Sabihin ko sa iyo marami pang mamamatay dito. Hindi ko lang maturo kung sino (I tell you; more people will die here. I just cannot say who),” he said. Duterte said he does not know when the country can acquire enough vaccines. As of April 13, the country has administered 1,255,716 doses of Covid-19 vaccines to medical frontliners, senior citizens and persons with comorbidities. The Philippines has received 3,025,600 doses of vaccines from Sinovac and AstraZeneca. In his speech, Duterte fired a broadside at the people who he said wanted him dead, saying they should pray harder and pray for the transmission of Covid-19. “For those people who want me dead, magdasal kayo ng husto… Covid raised to ... » Learn More about Duterte: More Covid deaths amid vaccine shortage
Nation will use AstraZeneca, despite blood-clot fears
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha shows a vial of AstraZeneca vaccine before being inoculation against Covid-19 at Government House in Bangkok on March 16. (Government House photo) The AstraZeneca vaccine will be the mainstay for the state's Covid-19 vaccination programme, Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says. "There are many factors for each country whether to use or not use the vaccine," Mr Anutin said. "But we have expertise to closely monitor the vaccine information. "We base decisions on scientific knowledge, not news. If something happens, we will let the public know. Please do not worry about it." Thailand has relied on using 71 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine and two million doses of CoronaVac developed by China-based Sinovac Biotech to inoculate about 35 million people or 50% of the population. The ministry will start the Covid-19 jab rollout this June and aims to have 50% of the population immunised by the end of this year. However, the authority ... » Learn More about Nation will use AstraZeneca, despite blood-clot fears

US finds no ‘currency manipulators’
(Reuters Photo) The United States refrained from designating any trading partner as a currency manipulator in the first foreign-exchange policy report of the Biden administration, even though Switzerland, Taiwan and Vietnam met thresholds for the label. Thailand is one of 11 countries that remain on a watchlist, meaning they met two of three criteria for currency manipulation that could put the US at a trade disadvantage. The Treasury Department said in a report released on Friday that Switzerland, Taiwan and Vietnam met criteria for the manipulator label, including a large trade surplus with the US. But it said there was “insufficient evidence” to conclude that they showed the intent of “preventing effective balance of payments adjustments or gaining unfair competitive advantage in international trade” to apply the tag. A Treasury official told reporters that the decision not to designate any nation a manipulator should not be seen as a mixed message. In December, the last ... » Learn More about US finds no ‘currency manipulators’

Jumbo HDB flats: Are they worth the price you’re paying?
Unless you’re living it up in a mega-mansion, homes in Singapore are hardly ever considered sprawling. Both economical and spacious, jumbo HDB flats could be the answer to your space woes. Let’s face it, spaciousness is not a term you would commonly use to describe HDB flats. Nowadays, we’d be lucky if our five-room BTO flat crossed the 110 square-metre threshold. With space in such short supply, our homes might start feeling too cramped for comfort, especially when the family starts to grow. Plus, once we’ve reached a certain age, sharing our bedrooms and that one communal bathroom just doesn’t quite cut it anymore. If you’re on the lookout for HDB flats that come with more than three bedrooms and two bathrooms, look no further than jumbo flats, particularly if you have a multi-generational family moving in. What is a jumbo flat? It is essentially a supersized version of your typical HDB flat. Think of it as two three-room or even four-room HDB flats combined to ... » Learn More about Jumbo HDB flats: Are they worth the price you’re paying?
