Who recognised Bangladesh first?
Bhutan's recognition of Bangladesh without waiting for Indian advice was a clever move. It was a calculated gamble to assert its independence, says Ambassador T P Sreenivasan. T himphu, the capital of Bhutan had very few comforts in 1971. For us, who went to Bhutan from Tokyo, with a nine-month old baby 42 years ago, the feeling was that we had walked backwards in time by about half a century. The first motorable road was opened only in 1968 and there were no commercial flights into Bhutan. The drive from the border town of Phuntsholing in India to Thimphu took the whole day, with a lunch break at Chukha, a small rivulet at that time, but a gigantic hydro-electric project now. Electricity was a rarity and we had to huddle around a bukhari , which burns wood to provide a level of comfort in the bitter cold. Life did not, however, stand still in Thimphu. 1971 was an exciting year in Bhutan and as the only diplomatic mission in the country, India was very much a partner in ... » Learn More about Who recognised Bangladesh first?
Wallowing in stardom or a minefield?
A growing number of youngsters aspire to be social media influencers for fame and fortune. But experts warn about a narcissitic trend that can be devastating for youths. Wang Yuke reports from Hong Kong. If Hong Kong's big-time fortune tellers can strike gold by amassing a huge following over time, there's a group of young go-getters trying to take a leaf out of their book — social media influencers. But the luck and instinct that may guarantee one's success in any field of endeavor simply don't fall from the sky. It could be a make-it-or-break-it move. Kenson, 10, is nothing short of a toy influencer in Hong Kong despite his tender age. "I often come across strangers recognizing me on the street. They would leap at me, excitedly shout out my name and ask for selfies," says Kenson shyly. "I was happy about it but it, somehow, set me on edge." While many young YouTubers wallow in stardom and the glee of being lionized, being a household name is not on Kenson's priority list. ... » Learn More about Wallowing in stardom or a minefield?

‘Ninnila Ninnila’ review: For the love of food
There are two approaches to cooking — one that follows recipes to the minute detail by measuring at every step, and one where ingredients are combined with an intuition and practised sense of smell and taste rather than by the measuring spoon. Whatever be the method, good food nourishes the soul. Ani I V Sasi’s Ninnila Ninnila (simultaneously dubbed in Tamil as Theeni ) shows a bit of both methods and roots for the second one. Food, here, reminds the central characters of people they have loved and lost. Food also helps to revive or forge new connections, heal, and find a new purpose in their lives. Ninnila Ninnila Cast: Ashok Selvan, Ritu Varma, Nithya Menen Direction: Ani Sasi Streaming on: ZeePlex Ani Sasi juxtaposes two unlike people who will soon cross paths. An insomniac and pot-bellied Dev (Ashok Selvan) whose life has been thrown out of gear after a loss, and Tara (Ritu Varma) who hopes to fill a void by mending a broken bond.
