Video PlayerClose MAKUENI, Kenya, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least seven people were killed and 63 others injured in a grisly road accident involving two commuter buses along Nairobi-Mombasa highway, the police confirmed on Thursday. Joseph Ole Napeiyan, the divisional police commander, said both vehicles belong to Modern Coast and collided near Salama area. Modern Coast is a regional bus company which plies major routes in the East African region. Napeiyan said the incident which occurred at 2 a.m. came barely a day after a similar accident in the same area which also involved a Modern Coast bus and another from Tahmeed bus company. "We have started investigating the case of the incident," said the police commander, adding that one bus was headed to Nairobi while the other was going to the coastal city of Mombasa. Mysuru giraffe travels 3,200 km by road to Guwahati zoo
The management of the century-old Mysuru zoo has created a record of sorts by successfully transporting a 12-foot tall male giraffe to Guwahati in Assam, covering a distance of about 3,200 km, including the roads in the hill terrains, through many States in a custom-built crate that was mounted on a long-chassis truck.It’s not the first time the zoo, which has expertise in the captive breeding of giraffes, has ferried the tallest land animal on the long-distance routes. What is unique in this case was the distance. This was perhaps the longest distance a giraffe has travelled on road so far in the recent decades, claimed the zoo authorities.The Mysuru zoo had in the past transported a giraffe to Patna zoo, covering a distance of about 1,800 km. The Karnataka High Court on Thursday ordered issue of notice to the State government on a PIL petition, which has questioned the permission granted for a liquor boutique, housed in a building on Mahatma Gandhi Road-Kasturba Road junction, situated barely within 30 metres from a statue of Mahatma Gandhi on M.G Road, and within 30-50 metres distance from a church and the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).A Division Bench comprising Justice Ravi Malimath and Justice M. Nagaprasanna passed the order on the petition filed by A.V. Amaranatha, a city-based advocate. Over 300 arbitration cases with claims of around Rs. 80,000 crore pending with Highways Ministry: Nitin Gadkari
New Delhi: The highways ministry has more than 300 ongoing arbitration cases with a claim amount of around Rs 80,000 crore, Union minister of road transport and highways Nitin Gadkari informed the Parliament on Thursday. “318 arbitration cases are ongoing with a claim amount of about Rs. 78, 653 crore,” Gadkari said in a written response in Lok Sabha. There are few cases where the amount of claim raised by the contractor or concessionaire is more than the total project cost. The average payout in arbitration cases does not exceed 20-25%, a government official said. Even with that percentage, the highways ministry stares at a liability of Rs 16,000-Rs. 20,000 crore. “Against the claim of around Rs 80,000 crore, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has made counter-claims of around Rs 35,000 crore,” the official quoted above said.
