On Jan. 29, the global graft watchdog Transparency International (TI) released the 2018 Corruption Perception Index (CPI). Indonesia shows marginal improvement as it scores at 38, one point higher than the 2017 score at 37. In Southeast Asia, Indonesia ranks fourth after Singapore ( 85 ), Brunei Darussalam ( 63 ), and Malaysia ( 47 ). Other neighboring countries scoring less than Indonesia include the Philippines ( 36 ), Thailand ( 36 ), and Timor Leste ( 35 ). The release of a new CPI report always makes headlines. However, do we really understand what CPI really means? People refer to the CPI as an indicator of corruption across countries since it was introduced by TI in 1995. As a leading global indicator of public sector corruption, according to TI, the Index sends a powerful message and governments have been forced to consider and act on graft in their countries. A senior partner of an international anti-corruption agency, Global Integrity Group, Stuart Gilman argued that … [Read more...] about Corruption Perception Index: What does it really mean?

By Ben Spurr Transportation Reporter Wed., Jan. 9, 2019 The TTC board will hold its first meeting of the new council term on Thursday, and already there’s no shortage of pressing decisions members will have to make in the coming months. They include grappling with the province’s plan to take ownership of the subway network, and deciding whether to increase fares as part of the 2019 budget, which is scheduled to go to council for approval in March. Four of the six councillors who sit on the 10-person board are new to the agency, including Chair Jaye Robinson. (The remaining four members are citizen appointees.) Ahead of their meeting, the Star put a series of questions to each councillor on the board to get their take on key TTC issues. All but Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong responded. HONG KONG (BLOOMBERG) - US President Donald Trump's surprise trade truce with the European Union has analysts asking, "What does this mean for the trade war with China?" So far there are two very different answers. One camp sees the deal between Mr Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker to suspend new tariffs while negotiating over trade as a deliberate attempt to mend fences with allies as the United States girds for a protracted dispute with China. "De-escalating the US-EU trade track, and possibly the Nafta trade track in the period ahead, does not mean the US-China trade track is also ripe for an off-ramp," Mr Krishna Guha, vice-chairman at Evercore ISI, wrote in a note. "This is possible, but it is at least as likely that the US is reducing trade tension with its allies in order to improve its leverage and staying power in what we continue to fear will be a prolonged trial of strength with Beijing." Mr Guha said Evercore ISI's base case is there will be no … [Read more...] about What does the apparent Trump-EU trade truce mean for China?
By Amy Pataki Restaurant Critic Thu., June 21, 2018 Pink juices leak from A&W Canada’s new veggie burger. The decidedly realistic patty, made from legumes and stained by beets, will be rolled out across Canada July 9. The Beyond Burger, $6.99, uses plant-based patties from Beyond Meats, a Los Angeles company in which Leonardo DiCaprio and Bill Gates have invested. It is Beyond Meat’s first foray into Canada, although a company spokesperson confirmed some patties have “leaked” into Toronto’s Summerhill Market. Beyond Meat aims to replicate America’s 80/20 ground beef, which contains 80 per cent lean meat and 20 per cent fatty. That lands somewhere close to Canada’s standard for medium ground beef, defined by a maximum fat content of 23 per cent. (Lean is a maximum of 17 per cent.) Article Continued Below The A&W patty is custom made, 3 ounces instead of the 4-ounce Beyond Meat supermarket version. After President Donald Trump confirmed in early March that he would meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, the world has been eagerly watching to see what will happen. If the potential meeting were to happen, six countries in particular – the US, North Korea, China, Russia, South Korea and Japan – will look to benefit from it. Although press secretary Sarah Sanders said on Tuesday that there is “no time or date” yet for a potential meeting between Trump and Kim, US officials have said that the talks might happen in May or June. “I’m going to be cautiously optimistic that a meeting will actually happen,” Rodger Baker, Stratfor’s vice president of Asia-Pacific Analysis, told Business Insider. Baker said he thought it was a good decision for Trump to meet with Kim, adding that the only downside to the two speaking could be a return to the bellicose rhetoric the world witnessed in 2017. Business Insider spoke with Baker … [Read more...] about 6 countries have a stake in Trump’s meeting with Kim Jong Un — here’s what all the big players want in coming North Korea talks
