Coronavirus: Don’t forget to stay cyber-safe while telecommuting

SINGAPORE - Mute the microphone and cover up the webcam after a teleconference, and lock the computer screen if you are walking away to take a break. These are among the measures recommended by SingCert (Singapore Computer Emergency Response Team) to stay cyber-safe while telecommuting - a reality faced by many today as companies increasingly activate their business continuity plans amid the coronavirus outbreak. In the advisory published on its website on Friday (March 27), SingCert, which is part of the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore, said: "Opportunistic cyber threat actors are capitalising on the situation to conduct malicious cyber activities by exploiting vulnerabilities in solutions or unsecured networks to gain unauthorised access to users' data or the organisation's network." Employees should therefore also use a secure Wi-Fi network, and send sensitive information over virtual private network (VPN). Change the default password of home routers and also check that ... » Learn More about Coronavirus: Don’t forget to stay cyber-safe while telecommuting

Abuse of security officers on the rise, almost half say they were abused on the job: Survey

SINGAPORE - Security officers here say it has become increasingly common for them to be subjected to some form of abuse, with the Covid-19 pandemic being blamed for increased tensions. A survey of 1,002 officers, conducted between September and November last year, found that two in five security officers were exposed to some form of abuse in their course of work. A previous survey of 707 officers released in June last year found that about one in three were abused on the job. Commenting on the results released on Thursday (March 25), Union of Security Employees (USE) executive secretary Steve Tan said the officers were most commonly subjected to verbal abuse. This was in part because of the need for additional security checks in light of safe measurement measures introduced amid the pandemic. "Visitors to various properties were asked to comply with safe management measures, and the person asking them to do it was the security officer," added Mr Tan. He said ... » Learn More about Abuse of security officers on the rise, almost half say they were abused on the job: Survey

Australia and UK may offer a safe haven to Hong Kong citizens

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia is “actively considering” providing a safe haven for Hong Kong citizens to migrate to the country after controversial national security laws enforced by China have come into effect. Yesterday, hundreds of people were arrested after protesters took to the streets to protest the new laws introduced by China to suppress dissidents. When asked if he was upset by the crackdown on demonstrators in Hong Kong and whether Australia should offer a safe haven for local residents, Morrison said, “The answer to both questions is yes and yes.” Also in the UK, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that he would give qualified people in Hong Kong a path to citizenship that would enable them to settle in the United Kingdom. Parliament: New cyber security label for smart devices

SINGAPORE - A cyber security label similar to the energy efficiency labels on home appliances will be rolled out to help buyers of smart devices better judge how exposed they are to cyber risks. This label will be stuck on Wi-Fi routers and smart home hubs, for starters, as part of Singapore's new Safer Cyberspace Masterplan designed to protect consumers and small firms. The labelling scheme will be extended to more of these so-called Internet of Things (IoT) or connected devices to help users, who are often unaware of their security risks. Announced by Singapore's Senior Minister of State for Communications and Information (MCI) Janil Puthucheary in Parliament on Tuesday (March 2), the initiative aims to address this "growing area of concern". "The scheme will raise consumer awareness of more secure products and aims to encourage manufacturers to adopt additional cyber security safeguards," said Dr Janil during the debate on MCI's budget. To be launched later this year, the ... » Learn More about Parliament: New cyber security label for smart devices

Survey shows that Thais feel “less safe”

A recent survey by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, the Suan Dusit Poll, shows that Thais are more concerned about their safety than ever before, citing the country’s economic woes as the reason. The poll was conducted from January 15-18 on 1,365 people throughout the Kingdom of varying education levels and occupations. The survey followed a spate of serious crimes in the news, including rapes, robberies, shootings and drug dealing, culminating in the high-profile Aurora gold shop robbery in Lop Buri province where three people died. On January 9, a man shot and killed three people and injured four others during a gold shop heist in Lop Buri. Numerous CCTV cameras captured the man’s brief rampage, during which he casually strolled into the shop and shot customers and staff. One of the victims was a two year old boy who was shot in the head while walking past the shop with his mother. 67.6% of those polled say that they’ve become more serious about their personal security over ... » Learn More about Survey shows that Thais feel “less safe”

Tokyo Olympics chiefs prepare to resume ‘safe’ test events

TOKYO: Tokyo Olympics organizers unveiled virus countermeasures for test events that will resume later this week for the first time since the Games were postponed by the pandemic. Tokyo 2020 chiefs pledged to hold the remaining 18 test events — which function as dress rehearsals for each sport — in a “safe and secure” manner, to see what they can “learn as we work towards the Games”. Test events were halted after the sport climbing event was held from March 6 to 8 last year, with Tokyo 2020 staff replacing athletes because of infection concerns. The first test event since the unprecedented postponement of the Games will be wheelchair rugby on April 3-4, with water polo to follow one week later. Tokyo 2020 Games delivery officer Hidemasa Nakamura said countermeasures would be based on the virus rulebooks unveiled by organisers earlier this year. “We’re trying to limit contact, avoid handshakes and other physical contact, and keep distance between athletes — one metre if two ... » Learn More about Tokyo Olympics chiefs prepare to resume ‘safe’ test events

Peace and security in armed conflicts mean presence of food and absence of gunfire

UNITED NATIONS: In 1941, the people of Greece were facing a horrific winter. The Axis powers had plundered local supplies and introduced an extortionate tax on Greek citizens. Allied forces imposed a cruel blockade, cutting off imports. Prices skyrocketed. Hundreds of thousands of civilians perished. I have been invited to address you (the UN Security Council) today as the executive director of Oxfam International, an expression of people power that was first launched to stand with the people of Greece to demand their most basic of rights — the right to food — in the midst of conflict. I am horrified that we are forced to confront the same basic injustice that gave birth to our founding nearly 80 years ago. Indeed, as we witness blockades cutting off food and fuel to Yemen, millions going hungry in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan and Syria, we should all be horrified. Three years ago, when this council unanimously adopted Resolution 2417, we heard an unequivocal ... » Learn More about Peace and security in armed conflicts mean presence of food and absence of gunfire
