I-League | Mohammedan Sporting earns top-six spot

Pedro Manzi’s brace propelled 10-man Mohammedan Sporting to a 2-0 win over Real Kashmir FC and earned it a top-six spot in the Hero I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Sunday. In another match, TRAU rallied to beat Sudeva Delhi FC 3-2 and also assure itself of a top-six berth. TRAU has 16 points from 10 matches, same as Sporting but with a better goal-difference, while Sudeva has nine from 10. Real Kashmir is second on 17 points. Aizawl FC picked up vital points in the race to stay safe from relegation by beating Chennai City FC 3-0. It was a creditable performance by Sporting, which not only kept a clean sheet despite losing its captain Kingsley Eze to a red card in the 34th minute but also handed RKFC its first defeat of the season. Manzi saw opposition goalkeeper Mithun Simantha off his lines and struck from his own half to draw first blood in the 74th minute. Five minutes later, he headed in a cross off a counterattack to help Sporting reach 16 points from 10 outings. ... » Learn More about I-League | Mohammedan Sporting earns top-six spot

We were resolute and strong: Jaishankar on border issue

India was strong and resolute when it came to handling the border issue and dealt with it in an effective manner, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday in an apparent reference to the standoff between India and China. Photograph: Yawar Nazir/Getty Images Similarly, India also dealt effectively with the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impact by fashioning its own response after listening to everyone, he said at the inaugural session of the 'Asia Economic Dialogue' organised by the Pune International Centre. "Last year, we had three big developments which all impacted us nationally. They impacted the world as well -- one was COVID-19, the second was its economic impact and the third was the challenges that we found on our border which obviously had implications," the external affairs minister said. Arvind Kejriwal govt’s innovative ideas helping Delhi to improve groundwater levels

New Delhi: Delhi is a land-locked city, making it dependent on neighbouring states for a regular supply of water. The raw water that Delhi receives is treated at the various water treatment plants before being supplied to homes. As is known, groundwater is also a pertinent source of water for Delhiites, but it’s limited, and its availability has been fast diminishing. With the relentless efforts of the Aam Aadmi Party government, there has been an improvement in groundwater levels in the Palla region, which have increased by two metres. In addition, CM Arvind Kejriwal has issued directions for these levels to be further improved. It’s heartening to note that the Delhi government’s floodwater harvesting initiative has yielded good results, which has been the two-meter improvement in Palla. The government has also diligently worked on the rejuvenation of 600 water bodies and lakes, and on the rejuvenation of old canals to further improve groundwater levels. Uttarakhand tragedy: Rescue teams facing problems, 72 bodies recovered so far

Dehradun : The rescue teams engaged in clearing muck from the slush-choked tunnel of NTPC ’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydro-power project are facing problems due to constant seepage of water in the tunnel. According to Swati Bhadoriya, Chamoli district magistrate, “The water is continuously seeping into the tunnel, which is creating problems for the teams working there to clear the muck. This is despite over half a dozen water pumping machines having been pressed into service.” Sources in the rescue teams told TOI that water from the Dhauliganga river is also entering the tunnel as after the February 7 flash-floods, the river bed and the tunnel bed are at the same elevation. The rescue personnel used excavators to divert the course of river flow to ensure that the muck-removing work is not hampered. After 22 days of continuous operation, multi-agency teams have managed to clear the slush and debris till 180 metres in the main tunnel, according to the State Emergency Operation ... » Learn More about Uttarakhand tragedy: Rescue teams facing problems, 72 bodies recovered so far

New WTO chief pushes for vaccine access, fisheries deal

The new head of the World Trade Organization called Monday for a “technology transfer” when it comes to COVID-19 vaccines and urged member nations to reach a deal to reduce overfishing after years of fruitless talks as she laid out her top priorities after taking office. Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist and former government minister, donned a mask and doled out welcoming elbow bumps as she took up her job at WTO headquarters on the banks of Lake Geneva. Still, she immediately set about trying to change the organization’s culture. “It cannot be business as usual. We have to change our approach from debate and rounds of questions to delivering results,” she told ambassadors and other top government envoys that make up the 164-member body’s General Council. “The world is leaving the WTO behind. Leaders and decision-makers are impatient for change,” she said, noting several trade ministers had told her that “if things don’t change,” they would not attend ... » Learn More about New WTO chief pushes for vaccine access, fisheries deal

Modi regrets not learning ‘world’s oldest language’ Tamil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he regrets not being able to learn the world's oldest language Tamil during his long political innings as a chief minister and prime minister. The prime minister said sometimes even a very small and simple question rankles the mind. "A few days ago Aparna Reddy ji of Hyderabad asked me one such question. She said 'You have been PM for so many years and were CM for so many years. Do you ever feel that something is missing?'" Modi said. Noting that the question seemed simple but was difficult, he said, "I pondered this over and told myself that one of my shortcomings was that I could not make much effort to learn Tamil, the oldest language in the world; I could not make myself learn Tamil!" The prime minister praised the Tamil ... » Learn More about Modi regrets not learning ‘world’s oldest language’ Tamil
