China hijacked NSA hacking tool to attack US citizens
New Delhi, In a daring incident, Chinese cybercriminals managed to steal, clone and use nation-grade cyber tools from none other than the US' National Security Agency (NSA) to attack US targets. The tool called "Jian" was actually a clone of software developed by the US National Security Agency (NSA)'s Equation Group, described as "one of the most sophisticated cyberattack groups in the world", according to a report by Check Point Research. "The caught-in-the-wild exploit of CVE-2017-0005, a 0-Day attributed by Microsoft to the Chinese APT31 (Zirconium), is in fact a replica of an Equation Group exploit code-named EpMe," the researchers said. Chinese bad actors had access to EpMe's files, both their 32-bits and 64-bits versions, more than two years before the infamous Shadow Brokers leak. In the Shadow Brokers leak, a mysterious group decided to publicly publish a wide range of cyber weapons allegedly developed by the Tailored Access Operations (TAO) unit of the NSA … [Read more...] about China hijacked NSA hacking tool to attack US citizens
The war on poverty: a Chinese saga
BEIJING -- China's massive anti-poverty campaign has transformed nearly 100 million lives in just eight years. It was a miracle that helped the world's most populous country achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goal on poverty eradication 10 years ahead of the schedule. A leader's promise On a crisp winter day in December 2012, Xi Jinping, who was not long ago elected general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited the mud-brick house of Tang Zongxiu located in the Taihang Mountains, northern China's Hebei Province. The dilapidated house was engulfed in darkness and had leakages. For two days, Xi visited multiple houses in two villages and saw similar sights of destitution. Knowing what it was like to be in penury, Xi, as the top leader, was determined to end it for all Chinese. He sounded a clarion call to end poverty nationwide, which he deemed an essential requirement of socialism. At the time, China still had 98.99 million people living … [Read more...] about The war on poverty: a Chinese saga
SolarWinds, Microsoft, FireEye, CrowdStrike defend actions in major hack -U.S. Senate hearing
WASHINGTON, - Top executives at Texas-based software company SolarWinds Corp, Microsoft Corp and cybersecurity firms FireEye Inc and CrowdStrike Holdings Inc defended their conduct in breaches blamed on Russian hackers and sought to shift responsibility elsewhere in testimony to a U.S. Senate panel on Tuesday. All four were victims in one of the worst hacks yet discovered, affecting about 100 U.S. companies and nine federal agencies. SolarWinds and Microsoft programs were used to attack others. The executives argued for greater transparency and information-sharing about breaches, with liability protections and a system that does not punish those who come forward, similar to airline disaster investigations. Microsoft President Brad Smith and others told the U.S. Senate's Select Committee on Intelligence that the true scope of the latest intrusions is still unknown, because most victims are not legally required to disclose attacks unless they involve sensitive information … [Read more...] about SolarWinds, Microsoft, FireEye, CrowdStrike defend actions in major hack -U.S. Senate hearing
