Bengaluru: Consumer-facing companies have either started submitting proposals or are planning to approach the government requesting it to vaccinate their employees , distributors and people in their ecosystem, claiming they are as exposed to risk as other frontline workers. At present, the government has prioritised health care workers, police personnel, elderly people and those with comorbidities in the first phase of the vaccination roll out. It is being suggested that companies use their corporate social responsibility funds to inoculate their workforce. German wholesale giant Metro Cash & Carry submitted a proposal to the Karnataka government already and is also in talks with the central government to vaccinate 1.2 crore kirana owners on priority in the March-April period of the immunisation programme. “Since the Covid-19 outbreak, most households have shopped at kirana stores besides online grocers. The owners and frontline retail staff are as exposed to risk,” said ... » Learn More about Consumer cos to approach govt to vaccinate their employees

These craft rum makers are creating a buzz in Goa
Kasturi Banerjee does not believe in half measures. Leaving behind an illustrious career in banking spanning 16 years, the former director of Compliance at an MNC bank, has taken the spirit industry by storm. She is the founder and CEO at Stilldistilling Spirits, based in Goa, that sprung into 2021 with Maka Zai, (‘I want’ in Konkani), a homegrown duo of white and gold rum with a distinctly Indian flavour. The banker-blender-meanders through the bylanes of nostalgia as she talks about her detour, “Being a banker in Mumbai, I had a hectic social life. This piqued my interest in the hospitality industry, so when the time came to carve my niche, that’s where I headed. I first took a bartending course. I also conducted whiskey tasting sessions, but there came a time when I wanted to make my own spirit instead of talking about others,” explains Kasturi. Getting started, she took all the time and guidance she wanted, getting in touch with Tulleeho, a provider of beverage education, ... » Learn More about These craft rum makers are creating a buzz in Goa
Economist Writer Adds Fizz to ‘Boring’ Beer Scene
July 17, 2013 08:36 A correspondent for the Economist decided to help overhaul what he sees as an insipid domestic beer scene by opening a bar that specializes in serving craft beers in central Seoul's Yongsan district in May. "Korean beer isn't tasty, at least that's how I feel," said 31-year-old Daniel Tudor, speaking in fluent Korean. The Englishman, who has lived in the country for five years, said he plans to quit his job at the Economist to focus his energies on the bar. In an article published on Nov. 22 last year, he wrote that Korean food is among the "most exciting" in the world, but domestic beer is so "boring" that even rival brands from North Korea whet appetites more. In line with the magazine's protocol, the story lacks a byline. "Their cuisine is one of the world's most exciting. South Korean diners would not tolerate bland kimchi (cabbage pickled in garlic and chili) or sannakji (fresh chopped octopus, still wriggling on the plate). So why do they ... » Learn More about Economist Writer Adds Fizz to ‘Boring’ Beer Scene
Taps Turned off for N.Korea’s Beer Festival
July 25, 2017 10:35 North Korea has abruptly canceled a beer festival that was to show the belligerent country's capital of Pyongyang in a fuzzier light starting Wednesday. The festival had been widely promoted by the state media and tour agencies, but apparently there was not enough to drink. Koryo Tours in China, which specializes in tours to North Korea, said on its blog on Sunday, "Sadly today we have been informed that the 2017 Pyongyang Beer Festival has been canceled. The reason for the cancellation is unclear and we don't expect full information to be forthcoming but it is possibly down to the ongoing drought in the country that has caused a great deal of trouble." The UN Food and Agriculture Organization said recently that North Korea is suffering its worst drought since 2001, and harvests have declined more than 30 percent compared to last year. But Unification Ministry spokesman Baek Tae-hyun here said Monday, "This may be related to strengthened international ... » Learn More about Taps Turned off for N.Korea’s Beer Festival
Kim Jong-un Wanted German Beer Garden in Pyongyang
July 22, 2013 12:30 North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has asked Paulaner to open a beer garden with a brewery in North Korea, but the Bavarian brewer declined, German daily Bild reported Friday. The brewer told Bild that it cannot afford another store in North Korea because it already plans to open 12 new beer gardens around the world, including one in the U.S. and one each in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia in August. Based in Munich, Paulaner is Germany's leading wheat beer brewer and has beer gardens around the world including 21 in Asia. Bild said Kim Jong-un has "outed himself as a beer lover" though his father was notoriously fond of Congnac. Bild said that it is not certain why Kim came up with the idea amid the regime's chronic food shortage, but added, "Man does not live by bread alone, but beer alone does not fill the stomach." The UN Food and Agriculture Organization in a recent report said that North Korea needs food assistance from the international ... » Learn More about Kim Jong-un Wanted German Beer Garden in Pyongyang
