NewClark City is home to world-class sporting venues for swimming and athletics. —NIÑO JESUS ORBETA The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will now shift its attention back to building the much-desired sports complex for the national athletes. “We are doing our best to make this longtime dream come true,” said PSC chair William Ramirez after the project was temporarily shelved to give way to the country’s hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games last month. Aside from Pangasinan, Tarlac, Laguna and Rizal, a land owner in Bataan also made a pitch to construct a 30-hectare sports facility in the province. “We are grateful for the support and interest that we are receiving from different LGUs (local government units). We are studying possibilities and best options,” Ramirez said. The training center could herald the age of ultramodern sports facilities in the country after world-class athletics and swimming venues were unveiled in New Clark City in Tarlac for last year’s SEA ... » Learn More about National training center among priorities of PSC again

Old clothes transformed into sugar by Swedish researchers
Image: YouTube/Université de Lund via What if we were able to recover cotton from used clothing and turn it into nylon or lycra? This is the surprising idea of Swedish researchers, who have developed an environmentally friendly method to convert textile cotton into glucose, which in turn can be used to make other fabrics. Did you know that even when you donate clothes, they are likely to end up in a landfill or incinerator? To avoid this fate befalling our cotton clothes (a material whose production has a heavy impact), scientists at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Lund in Sweden are currently working on a method to recycle the cotton from used clothes. Described in the publication Waste Management via ScienceDirect, their method is innovative: extracting cotton from clothes, then transforming them into glucose, thanks to sulfuric acid. Concretely, the principle consists in decomposing the vegetable fiber of cotton (cellulose) in order to obtain ... » Learn More about Old clothes transformed into sugar by Swedish researchers
SpaceX Starship rocket prototype nails landing… then blows up
SpaceX Starship SN10 explodes after liftoff at South Padre Island, Texas, U.S. March 3, 2021 in this still image taken from a social media video. Spadre/Pearl South Padre Resort via Youtube/via REUTERS The third time appeared to be the charm for Elon Musk’s Starship rocket – until it wasn’t. The latest heavy-duty launch vehicle prototype from SpaceX soared flawlessly into the sky in a high-altitude test blast-off on Wednesday from Boca Chica, Texas, then flew itself back to Earth to achieve the first upright landing for a Starship model. But the triumph was short-lived. Listing slightly to one side as an automated fire-suppression system trained a stream of water on flames still burning at the base of the rocket, the spacecraft blew itself to pieces about eight minutes after touchdown. It was the third such landing attempt to end in a fireball after an otherwise successful test flight for the Starship, being developed by SpaceX to carry humans and 100 tons of cargo on future ... » Learn More about SpaceX Starship rocket prototype nails landing… then blows up
Acquisition star Standhardinger puts Ginebra on course for brighter tomorrows
Barangay Ginebra is paving a path to a dynastic future by pulling a page from its past. The Gin Kings acquired NorthPort big man Christian Standhardinger for Greg Slaughter in a one-on-one swap that was reported a year ago, but was locked in the backburner, apparently because of a sabbatical that the Ginebra center took last year. “He’s a throwback to the Ginebra players of old,” Ginebra coach Tim Cone said of Standhardinger hours after the trade was announced on Friday morning by the PBA after approval from its trade committee the night before. “I think the (Gin Kings’) fans will appreciate his style of play.” The Inquirer reported the trade in February last year, citing it as one of the reasons Slaughter decided to take a sabbatical from the league. Slaughter flew to the United States but eventually mended fences with San Miguel Corp. top bosses, who signed him to a fresh contract before finally dealing him to the Batang Pier. Major piece “[Christian’s] strengths will ... » Learn More about Acquisition star Standhardinger puts Ginebra on course for brighter tomorrows
