Citi may shutter consumer banking biz in India
Citibank NA , the largest foreign bank in India, may be closing down its consumer banking division, joining a host of overseas lenders to have shut shop in India over the last few years. Earlier this month, Bloomberg had reported that the bank is looking to divest some units in retail banking in the Asia-Pacific region, including those in South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia. Reports now say it may look at hiving off its consumer banking unit in India too. The move comes when there is stress in retail portfolios due to pandemic and business is undergoing a slowdown. Interestingly, this development comes when HSBC recently reported hitting $1 billion profit in India. In September 2020, Citibanks's head of consumer banking in the country, Shinjini Kumar, has stepped down after three years at the helm, the American lender said on Wednesday. Kumar, 53, had joined the bank in 2017 from Paytm Payments Bank, where she was the chief executive. Recent ... » Learn More about Citi may shutter consumer banking biz in India

Coronavirus antibodies move from pregnant ladies to their infants, new study finds
A study drove by the 'American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology' discovered that the antibodies that help in guarding against the COVID-19 infection are transferred from mothers to their babies while in the womb. This discovery adds to growing evidence that suggests that pregnant women who generate protective antibodies after contracting the coronavirus often convey some of that natural immunity to their fetuses. The findings also lend support to the idea that vaccinating mothers-to-be may also have benefits for their newborns. "Since we can now say that the antibodies pregnant women make against COVID-19 have been shown to be passed down to their babies, we suspect that there`s a good chance they could pass down the antibodies the body makes after being vaccinated as well," said Dr Yawei Jenny Yang, an assistant professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine and the study`s senior author. Dr Yang and her team analysed blood samples from 88 ... » Learn More about Coronavirus antibodies move from pregnant ladies to their infants, new study finds
October 12 blackout was a sabotage
A source in the government said hackers have been trying to target the country’s power utilities since February. Last month’s power outage in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was possibly the result of a sophisticated sabotage attempt involving foreign entities, a probe carried out by the state police’s cyber cell has revealed. The month-long probe detected presence of multiple “suspicious log – ins” into the servers connected with power supply and transmission utilities by accounts operating from Singapore and a few other south Asian countries. The state police is now coordinating with national agencies to determine if these “intrusions, interferences” were part of a coordinated effort aimed at crippling the country’s financial capital.
