Moon in Line for Coronavirus Vaccination Next Month
March 05, 2021 13:21 President Moon Jae-in will get his coronavirus vaccination in April, Cheong Wa Dae said Thursday. Moon will be given an AstraZeneca jab in a bid to allay public fears about the brand. A Cheong Wa Dae spokesman said. "Like ordinary people, he won't choose his vaccine." Pfizer's vaccine, which thought to be more reliable and less prone to producing side effects, is only given to medical professionals, the spokesman added. The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency does not let people choose a vaccine, except for officials who need to visit foreign countries on urgent duties. Currently, the AstraZeneca vaccine is only available for people under 65 here, but the tide is turning in some European countries which have now approved it for the elderly, and Moon is 68. His inoculation will be fixed depending on his schedule to attend the G7 summit in the U.K. in June, the spokesman added. Time to watch your weight: Obesity can increase risk of Covid fatality
LONDON : The majority of global Covid-19 deaths have been in countries where many people are obese , with coronavirus fatality rates 10 times higher in nations where at least 50% of adults are overweight , a global study found on Thursday. The report, which described a "dramatic" correlation between countries' Covid-19 death and obesity rates, found that 90% or 2.2 million of the 2.5 million deaths from the pandemic disease so far were in countries with high levels of obesity. The study analysed the Covid-19 death figures from Johns Hopkins University in the United States and the World Health Organization's Global Health Observatory data on obesity. Strikingly, the authors said, there is no example of a country where people are generally not overweight or obese having high Covid-19 death rates. "Look at countries like Japan and South Korea, where they have very low levels of Covid-19 deaths as well as very low levels of adult obesity," said Tim Lobstein, an ... » Learn More about Time to watch your weight: Obesity can increase risk of Covid fatality

Divorce Rate Drops in Epidemic
March 06, 2021 08:27 The coronavirus epidemic has paradoxically led to fewer divorces, even though couples are spending more time together cooped up at home all day. According to Statistics Korea, 106,512 couples divorced last year, down 3.8 percent from the previous year. The number of divorce cases filed in court also declined from 8,600 to 8,300. The development contrasts with previous crises in Korea. In the Asian financial crisis in 1998, the divorce rate rose 27 percent, while in 2003, a year after the credit card bubble burst, divorces surged 15 percent. In 2009, after the global financial crisis, divorces increased around six percent. Lee Woong-jin at matchmaking agency Sunwoo said, "This shows that there is a difference between types of crises -- one caused by the epidemic and others caused by financial difficulties." But the main reason may be that courts did not sit as frequently as in normal times. One judge at the Seoul Family Court said, "Many of the ... » Learn More about Divorce Rate Drops in Epidemic
