Korea Among World’s Top 10 for Wi-Fi Hotspots

October 26, 2009 09:07 Korea has the seventh largest number of Wi-Fi locations in the world with 12,814 hotspots as of the first half of this year, a report releas Wi-Fi hotspots are public areas such as hotel lobbies, airports and cafes where a wireless Internet connection is available for wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) devices. In the list compiled by JiWire, a U.S. mobile media company, the U.S. ranked first with 68,059 Wi-Fi hotspots, followed by China, the U.K., France, Russia and Germany. 95% of Households Have High-Speed Internet

September 16, 2008 10:57 Korea is living up to its image as one of the most wired countries with almost every household having access to the high-speed Internet. According to the Korea Communications Commission, 620,000 more households subscribed to high-s the total to over 15 million or around 95 percent of all households. An official at the telecom regulator said although the subscription rate is nearing saturation point, the number is likely to go up when Internet Protocol Television services are launched next year. OECD Sees Internet as Crucial for Economic Progress

June 18, 2008 09:51 World experts discussed ways to use the Internet as a driving force for the recovery of the global economy at the OECD Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy which opened in Seoul on Tuesday. In a welcoming address, President Lee Myung-bak stressed that the Internet should be a place for trust. "The spread of false and incorrect information through spam e-mails abusing anonymity is threatening people's rational thinking and trust," he said. "The most urgent policy challenge for the Internet industry is to secure trust in transactions that are essential for the Internet economy to continue growing." The president warned that the power of the Internet can be a poison rather than a cure unless confidence is secured. "We are now experiencing how beneficial or harmful the Internet can be depending on whether it works positively or negatively," he said. Lee, Gates Agree to Cooperate in IT

May 07, 2008 10:21 President Lee Myung-bak and Microsoft chairman Bill Gates agreed to strengthen global cooperation in information technology on Tuesday. In a meeting at Cheong Wa Dae, Gates accepted Lee's proposal to become a global adviser to the president. Gates said Korea was an "important partner" for Microsoft's global software business, adding his company will continue to strengthen its partnership with the Korean government and companies to generate W7 trillion worth of economic effects (US$1=W1,015). Gates promised Microsoft will invest US$147 million in Korea in the automotive sector, information technology, games, and education over the next five years. Prior to the meeting, Microsoft signed a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors and the Institute for Information and Technology Advancement on joint investment in an automobile innovation center. Korea to Build Super-Speed Internet by 2012

February 02, 2009 08:44 Korea is determined to acquire the world's fastest wired and wireless Internet service at 10 times the speed of the current service by 2012. The government and the communications industry plan to invest some W34 trillion (US$1=W1,379) over the next five years in the project. The Korea Communications Commission on Sunday said it finalized plans for Internet services at an average speed of 1 Gbps through fixed lines and 10 Mbps through wireless. One Gbps allows users to download a 120-minute film in just 12 seconds. The aim is to give users seamless access to large-capacity, high-quality convergence services such as IPTV.
