IIT Madras Researchers identify a Sustainable, High-Yielding Alternative Source for Anti-Cancer Drug Camptothecin
CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology Madras Researchers have identified a sustainable and high-yielding alternative source for the anti-cancer drug Camptothecin . This novel microbial fermentation process can be an economically-efficient method of production to fulfill the market demand at a large scale. Topotecan and Irinotecan are two widely used anticancer drugs, which are produced by using Camptothecin as the lead molecule. More than a dozen derivatives and conjugates of Camptothecin are under various stages of clinical trials for anti-cancer applications. Camptothecin is an alkaloid isolated from the Chinese tree Camptotheca acuminata and the Indian tree Nothapodytes nimmoniana. Nearly 1,000 tons of plant material is required to extract just one ton of Camptothecin. Due to extensive overharvesting to meet the market demand both these plants are now critically endangered. The N. nimmoniana population has seen more than a 20% decline in the last decade alone. HC rules against aided school teachers contesting Assembly polls
A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Wednesday barred aided school teachers and non-teaching staff from contesting Assembly elections. The Bench made the ruling while allowing a few public interest litigations seeking to prevent aided school teachers from contesting Assembly elections. The petitioners contended that though government teachers were barred from participating in political activities, including contesting Assembly elections, there was no such prohibition on aided school teachers. Allowing the petitions, the Bench held unconstitutional section 2 (IV) of the Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualifications) Act, 1951, which said that employees of non-governmental educational institutions would not be disqualified for being chosen as a member of the Assembly by reason only of his/her holding any office in any non-governmental educational institutions. The court made it clear that the declaration would be applied prospectively. Right to Education Act The ... » Learn More about HC rules against aided school teachers contesting Assembly polls

In boost for Covid-19 battle, Pfizer vaccine found 94% effective in real world
The first big real-world study of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine to be independently reviewed shows the shot is highly effective at preventing Covid-19, in a potential landmark moment for countries desperate to end lockdowns and reopen economies. Up until now, most data on the efficacy of Covid-19 vaccines has come under controlled conditions in clinical trials , leaving an element of uncertainty over how results would translate into the real world with its unpredictable variables. The research in Israel - two months into one of the world's fastest rollouts, providing a rich source of data - showed two doses of the Pfizer shot cut symptomatic Covid-19 cases by 94% across all age groups, and severe illnesses by nearly as much. The study of about 1.2 million people also showed a single shot was 57% effective in protecting against symptomatic infections after two weeks, according to the data published and peer-reviewed in the New England Journal of Medicine on Wednesday. ... » Learn More about In boost for Covid-19 battle, Pfizer vaccine found 94% effective in real world

The Trials and Rewards of a Simultaneous Translator
October 15, 2013 08:28 Chon Hee-kyung's life changed dramatically when her family emigrated to the U.S. when she was 11 years old. After graduating from high school, she came back to Korea to study mathematics at Korea University but gradually lost interest in the subject and tried to find something that she could enjoy. That is when she hit on the profession of interpreter. It seemed an ideal job for her as she spoke English and enjoyed meeting people. She then studied at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies' Graduate School of Interpretation and Translation. Now a freelance interpreter, she mainly offers services as a simultaneous translator for conferences and other events. Interpreters must be not only good at foreign languages but also at helping communication between people who speak different languages, Chon said. At conferences, her brain, ear and mouth do not rest while those on the podium speak.
