Reliance Jio , Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea , who are aiming to go big on digital services through their own over the top (OTT) platforms, now face another regulatory oversight – the latest social intermediary guidelines . The regulations come at a time when the trio are banking on their digital offerings via OTT platforms to generate additional revenue from millions of their subscribers, by driving up data consumption. "We are studying the regulations…the telcos with value added services will come under the OTT regulations," said a senior executive in one of the three telcos. Another senior executive at a second operator confirmed the same, adding their legal teams are still going through the revised intermediary guidelines under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act, announced Thursday. The revised guidelines seek to ensure that OTT players such as video streaming service providers and social media apps such as Twitter and WhatsApp are more accountable for ... » Learn More about Telcos to also come under regulatory scrutiny of revised intermediary rules

Govt denies any impact from Chinese cyber campaign against Indian power systems
New Delhi: The power ministry has denied any impact of an ongoing Chinese cybercampaign against Indian power systems including the national grid, load despatch centres and generation assets, stating the incidents have not led to any data breach. The official communication came in response to at least one media report, published by New York Times Sunday, that said a new report by Recorded Future has suggested the Mumbai power outage incident was connected to the Galwan Valley clash last year between Indian and China troops. The power ministry said a report from Insikt talks about the imminent threat from the Red Echo group based in China. "There is no impact on any of the functionalities carried out by POSOCO due to the referred threat. No data breach/data loss has been detected due to these incidents," the ministry said in a statement. It added that CERT-IN had informed the ministry on 19 November last year on the threat of malware called Shadow Pad at some control ... » Learn More about Govt denies any impact from Chinese cyber campaign against Indian power systems

China appears to warn India: Push too hard and the lights could go out
Early last summer, Chinese and Indian armies clashed in a surprise border battle in the remote Galwan Valley, bashing each other to death with rocks and clubs. Four months later and more than 1,500 miles away in Mumbai, rains shut down and the stock market closed as the power went out in a city of 20 million people. Hospitals had to switch to emergency generators to keep ventilators running amid a coronavirus outbreak that was among India’s worst. Now, a new study lends weight to the idea that those two events may have been connected — as part of a broad Chinese cyber campaign against India’s power grid, timed to send a message that if India pressed its claims too hard, the lights could go out across the country. The study shows that as the battles raged in the Himalayas, taking at least two dozen lives, Chinese malware was flowing into the control systems that manage electric supply across India, along with a high-voltage transmission substation and a coal-fired power ... » Learn More about China appears to warn India: Push too hard and the lights could go out
