Stop demolitions, UN, EU tell Israel

HAIFA: The United Nations and European members of the Security Council on Friday (Saturday in Manila) called on Israel to stop demolitions of Bedouin settlements in the Jordan Valley and for humanitarian access to the community living in Humsa Al-Baqaia. In a joint statement at the end of a monthly session of the Security Council on the conflict in the Middle East, Estonia, France, Ireland, Norway and Britain said they were “deeply concerned at the recent repeated demolitions and confiscation of items, including of EU- and donor-funded structures carried out by Israeli authorities at Humsa Al-Baqaia in the Jordan Valley.” It said the concern was also focused on the 70 people or so living in the Bedouin community, including 41 children. “We reiterate our call on Israel to halt demolitions and confiscations,” the statement said. “We further call on Israel to allow full, sustained and unimpeded humanitarian access to the community in Humsa Al-Baqaia.” Humsah Al-Baqaia sits in ... » Learn More about Stop demolitions, UN, EU tell Israel

Thai condo developers clearing inventory rather than starting new projects

“With waves of uncertainty and financial stress crashing into the market from the COVID-19 pandemic, most residential property developers have decided to postpone their plans.” CBRE, the international property consultants, reports that most Thai developers are postponing the launch of new condo projects to focus on clearing existing stock. Discounting completed projects to generate quick revenue as a financial lifeboat is the best solution for many of the country’s larger developers whilst the market is in limbo. Rathawat Kuvijitrsuwan, head of CBRE Research and Consulting in Thailand believes that, now business is gradually recovering, a few developers have started to launch new condominium projects. “In the first half of 2020, the Bangkok condominium landscape was gloomy with fewer than 10,000 condominium units launched, which was much lower than the total number of new launches in the past three years of more than 60,000 condominium units per year.” Since June, CBRE ... » Learn More about Thai condo developers clearing inventory rather than starting new projects

Probe Muntinlupa land scam – PACC

Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) Commissioner Greco Belgica asked the Bureau of Local Government Finance to investigate allegations that a syndicate was engaged in land-grabbing in Muntinlupa City in connivance with the city treasurer’s office. In a complaint he sent to PACC, Manuel Alberto, a resident of Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa, accused the city treasurer, Anastacio Minoza, of helping the syndicate carry out its scheme. Alberto said the syndicate sees to it that notices for payment of property taxes were not sent to the real addresses of a property owner. Once the owner misses out on the payments, the property would be foreclosed and the syndicate sells it without the owner’s knowledge. Alberto said the certificate of the land where he built his residence was cancelled because it had been auctioned by the Muntinlupa government after his unpaid property taxes reached P323,000. He said he was never notified of the auction. The final notice from ... » Learn More about Probe Muntinlupa land scam – PACC

Luxury resort built on national park land given demolition order

“Tear it down, or we will.” That’s the ultimatum officials have given the owner of a luxury resort built on national park land in Kanchanaburi, western Thailand. The Phatsapada Resort, which consists of 17 chalets, has been built on land belonging to Khao Laem National Park. A demolition order, posted outside the property yesterday, gives the owner 7 days in which to pull it down. “Failure to do so will see officials take charge of the demolition, at a cost of 200,000 baht, which the owner will be obliged to pay.” The Bangkok Post reports that the resort was recently inherited by the heirs of its former owner, Ms Jarupha Detchinda, after she died. It’s understood Jarupha represented an alleged “high-ranking member of the military” who built the resort, according to Niphon Chamnongsirisak, from the Protected Areas Regional Office 3. Jarupha had previously been fined 30,000 baht and sentenced to 6 months’ imprisonment in January 2018. She was also required to pay 103,379 baht ... » Learn More about Luxury resort built on national park land given demolition order

Top 10 things that changed in Thailand during the Covid outbreak

Things have changed. In some cases they’ve changed a lot and may never be the same again. Many people are suffering as a result of the impacts of lockdowns and the border closures. Entire industries, like aviation and entertainment, have been profoundly affected. Some people are being forced to re-invent their lives as a result. Fears over Covid-19 are causing people to change their habits and re-evaluate their lives. Here are some of the main things we believe have changed since January this year. Face Masks The now ever-present face mask will be with us for a long time. In Asia, it was never uncommon to see people wearing face masks for traffic, air pollution, fears of disease or just as a fashion statement. In the Covid-era, mask wearing will now just become part of what we wear when in public spaces. When we leave home we’ll check if we have our keys, our wallet AND our face mask. Even when the government relaxes the current laws about the wearing of face masks, most ... » Learn More about Top 10 things that changed in Thailand during the Covid outbreak

Britain to open LGBT retirement home

DOVER: Britain’s first lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and related communities (LGBT+) retirement home is to open in London later this year, after securing a multimillion-pound loan from the city’s mayor, a housing association announced on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila). Tonic Housing said the £5.7-million ($7.9-million) loan from the Greater London Authority would help buy 19 properties in the Vauxhall area in the south of British capital. Sales of the one- and two-bedroom shared ownership homes on the top four floors of the Norman Foster-designed Bankhouse development on the banks of the River Thames will begin in the coming months. Prices are likely to start from £135,000 for a 25-percent share of a one-bed apartment and £180,000 for a 25-percent share of a two-bed apartment. Tonic called the scheme a “major milestone.” “There is no LGBT+ affirming provision with care currently in operation in the UK, despite there being a clearly defined need and demand from within the ... » Learn More about Britain to open LGBT retirement home
