Uddhav Thackeray slams Centre over rising fuel prices; replies to opposition over Sanjay Rathod’s resignation
Mumbai: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday evening slammed the Centre over the rise in prices of petrol and diesel. The Shiv Sena chief also replied to the opposition amid the demand for ouster of Maharashtra minister Sanjay Rathod over his name being linked to the death of a woman. Addressing a press conference, he said, "The agitations that you are leading against power bills, why not lead the same ones against petrol and diesel? We saw Tendulkar's century, Virat's century, but now we will see petrol scoring a century for the first time. The finance minister is sitting here... dada (Ajit Pawar), if I have said something wrong, please correct me." "The Centre has increased its cess on fuel, GST due to states is still not disbursed. Just because you scream and shout, doesn't make what you say the truth. There are Rs 29,000 crore plus due from the Centre through GST, so why aren't they shouting and protesting against that?" he added. Voice vote as constitutional subterfuge
The Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill was passed by the State’s Legislative Council on Monday, February 8. The Bill had already been passed by the Legislative Assembly where the State government enjoys a majority. But the prospect of the Bill passing the Upper House was doubtful as the Opposition parties — the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) — have a majority in the Council; and both were opposed to the Bill. But the law was passed by the Council despite the lack of a majority. Instead of having a division vote based on actual voting as is usual and as the Opposition members had demanded, the presiding officer just declared the Bill passed by voice vote without any division. New legislative template If this sounds rather familiar, it is because an uncannily similar process was followed to pass the controversial farm laws (by the Rajya Sabha) in September 2020 . Here too, the government seemed to lack a majority to pass the bills in the Upper ... » Learn More about Voice vote as constitutional subterfuge
Fuzzy law, unclear jurisprudence, trampled rights
On February 1, 2021, in the wake of the intensification of the farmers’ protests and reports of violent incidents on January 26 – a number of Twitter accounts became inaccessible in India . These included (among many others) the accounts of The Caravan magazine, the actor Sushant Singh, and the Kisan Ekta Morcha handle, which was chronicling the protests. In the beginning, it was unclear whether this was Twitter’s decision, based on its belief that the accounts had violated its Terms of Service (the reason for its permanent suspension of Donald Trump from its platform, for example), or whether Twitter had been ordered to do so by the government, or by a court. As outrage mounted, the Government of India clarified that it had invoked Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, and ordered Twitter to block access to these accounts. The reason, it appeared, was the use of the hashtag #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide, which was deemed a threat to public order. The merits of this ... » Learn More about Fuzzy law, unclear jurisprudence, trampled rights
