'Vietnam had shown that the world could indeed be changed and the power of the people was more than the power of the State.' 'America's withdrawal from Vietnam was an inspiring moment for all of us. We believed it was a glorious victory of ideology and spirit, as historic as the defeat of the Nazis.' Kumar Ketkar remembers the end of the Vietnam War 40 years ago. Image: Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War. Photograph: Getty Images I distinctly remember the tense and confrontationist atmosphere in Bombay when Madame Binh visited the city in July 1970. Madame Nguyen Thi Binh was the Communist leader of South Vietnam. The peasants organised by the Communist Party there were termed the Vietcong by the US military and the American media. So when the news appeared in the Indian press that a senior Vietcong leader, Madame Binh, would visit Bombay (it was not Mumbai then), we were excited. Young Actress Spooks Viewers with Chilling Movie Role
November 09, 2013 08:19 Actress Kim Yoon-hye is giving audiences a chill with her striking performance as a cold and aloof high school girl in director Choi Jin-sung's romantic thriller "Steel Cold Winter," which was released on Thursday. "I've heard many times that I look cold or mysterious. A few years ago, I played the role of another psychopathic student in a TV drama, so people may think I'm a kind of cold-hearted or gloomy person. But the reality is far from that," said the 22-year-old actress. "At first, I was afraid that I'd become typecast, but I also realize that I've been given a rare opportunity. And as I appear in more films or dramas in the future, I'm sure I'll be able to expand my acting range rather than being pigeonholed." The shooting of "Steel Cold Winter" mostly took place on an icy lake beside a rural village. "I spent two hours every morning and evening for three weeks learning how to skate for the movie. That was quite challenging, ... » Learn More about Young Actress Spooks Viewers with Chilling Movie Role
Writer Willam Dalrymple: ‘I don’t believe Muslims are a problem and Islam a threat’
Next 'When Sikhs were killed in the Afghan-Sikh war in 1837, the Afridis used to bury their heads like flowerpots in the ground,' writer and popular historian William Dalrymple tells Rediff.com 's Syed Firdaus Ashraf. "T his obsession of linking Islam and violence is a false one," says writer and popular historian William Dalrymple , whose latest book Return of a King is a historical work based on the First Afghan War. In the second part of an interesting conversation with Rediff.com 's Syed Firdaus Ashraf , Dalrymple discusses how the defeat of the great imperial power in that war is central to what the Afghans think of themselves. Dalrymple, who has written two widely acclaimed books on the Mughals, counters the view that peace eludes the Islamic world and says that in the last 300 years there have been more instances of Muslim countries being invaded than them being invaders themselves. No more absolute poverty in China: Xi
President Xi Jinping on Thursday declared that China has scored a “complete victory” in its fight against poverty by lifting over 770 million people out of it in the last four decades, calling it another “miracle” created by the country that will go down in history. Absolute poverty has been eradicated in the world’s most populous country, Xi announced while addressing a gathering held here to mark the country’s accomplishments in poverty alleviation and honour its model poverty fighters. China has a population of around 1.4 billion. With this, China has achieved the UN goal of poverty eradication 10 years ahead of the 2030 deadline, he said. Over the past eight years, the final 98.99 million impoverished rural residents living under the current poverty line have all been lifted out of poverty. All the 832 impoverished counties and 128,000 impoverished villages have been removed from the poverty list, he said. ... » Learn More about No more absolute poverty in China: Xi

New Delhi: Twenty-seven law enforcement officers were left injured on Tuesday after clashes broke out between the supporters of Serhiy Sternenko, former head of the Odessa cell of the banned extremist organization 'Right Sector' and the police.
