NEW YORK/CHICAGO/LOS ANGELES - U.S. retailers and pharmacies like Walgreens and CVS Health are preparing for a fresh round of "bot" attacks by scalpers hoping to snap up COVID-19 vaccine appointments as they did hoarding Sony PlayStation 5s and Nike sneakers.For over a decade, the retail industry has battled so-called "scalper bots," programmed to cut digital lines and snap up limited-supply products within milliseconds of their release, that are resold at significant mark-ups.The coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the problem because the boom in online shopping expanded scalpers' sights to new categories from fitness equipment to essential goods like toilet paper and detergents. Starbucks’ recovery, solid in China, still slow in the US

Starbucks' recovery slowed at the end of last year as U.S. coronavirus cases mounted, but the coffee titan says it's confident its U.S. business will fully recover by March."I am optimistic, because this year holds tremendous promise for healing," Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson said in a conference call with analysts Tuesday.The Seattle-based company said its global sales at stores opened at least a year fell 5% in the October-December period. That was an improvement from the prior quarter, but it was still a bigger decline than the 4% drop Wall Street was expecting, according to analysts polled by FactSet.Starbucks also fell short of revenue forecasts. The company reported sales of $6.75 billion in its fiscal first quarter, below the $6.9 billion than analysts forecast. Not counting one-time items, Starbucks said it earned 61 cents per share in the October-December period. Video PlayerClose WASHINGTON, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have declined from recent surges across the United States, but health experts warn more contagious coronavirus strains may threaten to undo progress and lead to a resurgence. A total of 125,735 new COVID-19 cases were reported across the country on Monday, bringing the seven-day average daily increase of cases to about 144,000, according to data updated by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday. It was down about 42 percent from a peak of almost 250,000 new cases per day last month. Hospitalizations nationwide have also dropped. There were 92,880 people hospitalized with COVID-19 across the United States as of Tuesday, according to The COVID Tracking Project. "Compared to last week, the number of people currently hospitalized with COVID-19 is down by 10 percent or more in 38 states," said the tracking project.
