OECD Sees Internet as Crucial for Economic Progress

June 18, 2008 09:51 World experts discussed ways to use the Internet as a driving force for the recovery of the global economy at the OECD Ministerial Meeting on the Future of the Internet Economy which opened in Seoul on Tuesday. In a welcoming address, President Lee Myung-bak stressed that the Internet should be a place for trust. "The spread of false and incorrect information through spam e-mails abusing anonymity is threatening people's rational thinking and trust," he said. "The most urgent policy challenge for the Internet industry is to secure trust in transactions that are essential for the Internet economy to continue growing." The president warned that the power of the Internet can be a poison rather than a cure unless confidence is secured. "We are now experiencing how beneficial or harmful the Internet can be depending on whether it works positively or negatively," he said. This remark is seen as blaming groundless rumors circulating online for worsening the ... » Learn More about OECD Sees Internet as Crucial for Economic Progress

February 02, 2009 08:44 Korea is determined to acquire the world's fastest wired and wireless Internet service at 10 times the speed of the current service by 2012. The government and the communications industry plan to invest some W34 trillion (US$1=W1,379) over the next five years in the project. Desert locusts still a threat in east Africa

While some parts of east Africa have almost eliminated desert locusts, the situation remains serious in some countries as well as in Yemen, raising fears that a new wave could emerge and spread across the region. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization, or FAO, said that in Kenya, only a few immature swarms remain in the northwest part of the country, but aerial control operations are ongoing. The UN agency warned that a small third generation of breeding is likely to commence in October but it may be limited by below-normal rains that are predicted for this year. Jane Mule, from Kenya's Kitui county, hopes the third generation of locusts will be controlled in the current breeding areas to avoid a repeat of massive destruction. "I can't imagine similar swarms landing in my farm or pasture land. I don't wish to experience a similar destruction. I call upon the government to do the best it can to eliminate the insects," Mule said. FDA lays groundwork for vaccine boosters

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is looking to quickly authorize COVID-19 vaccine booster shots, but there are concerns about the safety of such approvals and newly tweaked vaccines without massive trials. The FDA issued new guidelines Monday that trials for coronavirus booster shots aimed at emerging variants can be narrower than those for the original COVID-19 vaccines. The guidelines are intended to speed up the review process amid worries that the new variants will undermine efforts to halt the virus' spread. While new guidance also says a tweaked COVID-19 vaccine can skip the months-long process of a randomized clinical test that would compare it with a placebo, there are some concerns if the modified vaccines will be safe enough without major trials. Some other vaccines are regularly updated similarly. Because the influenza virus evolves rapidly from one year to the next, vaccine developers have to come up with new recipes annually. Moreover, the newly tweaked ... » Learn More about FDA lays groundwork for vaccine boosters
