Tiger Woods will not face charges in car crash

They do happen, unfortunately.’ IMAGE: The damaged car of Tiger Woods is towed away after he was involved in a car crash, near Los Angeles on Tuesday. Photograph: Mario Anzuoni/Reuters Tiger Woods will not face criminal charges in the car crash that left him with serious injuries, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said on Wednesday, as the golf great recovered from extensive surgery to repair his fractured right leg and shattered ankle. Investigators were still trying to determine what caused Woods, 45, to lose control of the grey Genesis sport utility vehicle he was driving on Tuesday morning. Woods was negotiating a curved, downhill stretch of highway that authorities said was notoriously dangerous when the luxury SUV he was driving veered across the opposite lanes, collided with a road sign and rolled several times before coming to rest. Woods’ crash ‘purely an accident’: Sheriff
The Los Angeles County sheriff characterised the crash that seriously injured Tiger Woods as “purely an accident” and appeared to rule out any potential criminal charges even as authorities were still investigating. Deputies saw no evidence the golf star was impaired by drugs or alcohol after Tuesday’s rollover wreck on a downhill stretch of road known for crashes, Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. “He was not drunk,” Villanueva said during a livestreamed social media event. “We can throw that one out.” Woods, who had checked into a clinic in 2017 for help dealing with prescription medication, was driving alone through coastal Los Angeles suburbs when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. The crash caused “significant” injuries to his right leg that required surgery, according to a post on the golfer’s Twitter account. ... » Learn More about Woods’ crash ‘purely an accident’: Sheriff

Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
Residents of Xiazhuang, Chongqing, used to risk their lives whenever they ventured out of the mountain village. Surrounded by steep cliffs about 1,000 meters high, there was only one pathway out of the village, and it took the villagers three days to walk to the main town. In the four decades to 1997, 23 people had died from falling off the cliff while cutting firewood or commuting to the county seat, and 75 people had been injured or disabled while doing other activities, said village head Mao Xianglin. As a local saying goes, it is even hard for birds to fly out of the village. Mao, who had been in his position for two years, summoned nearly all of Xiazhuang's 400 villagers for a meeting in 1997 and suggested building a road snaking along the mountains. "Almost no villager agreed because they had no money, no machines and no confidence to take on the tough project," said the 61-year-old. "Mountains had isolated us from the outside for generations. We had to do something ... » Learn More about Sturdy mountain road opens path to better life
Relocation helps alleviate poverty in Tibet
Living in an extremely harsh environment at high altitude is one of the primary causes of poverty in the Tibet autonomous region. To solve it, the region has relocated people to more favorable places over the years. For residents of Bupal village, it paid off. Bupal is located in steep, treacherous terrain in Tsawarong township in Tibet's Zayul county. Bordering Yunan province, the township is remote and lacks farmland — typical of such poor villages before 2015. Relocating residents changed everything for the better. The people of Bupal had lived on steep mountain slopes. Their shared problems included difficult transportation, unsafe drinking water and poor housing. With an investment more than 70 million yuan ($11 million), more than 400 families and single residents of Bupal and five other communities of Tsawarong were relocated to Rongmad in Zayul county in 2015, wherre the average altitude is 1,600 meters, far lower than Tibet's average of 4,000 meters. China Focus: Is China’s poverty cure replicable?
Video Player Close BEIJING, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- When Mao Zedong stood on Tian'anmen Rostrum in Beijing to declare the birth of New China in 1949, a Herculean task stood before him and the Communist Party of China (CPC) that he led: feeding and clothing 540 million Chinese people, nearly 90 percent of whom lived in rural areas. "Poverty is not socialism," "socialism means eliminating poverty," and "we must keep abreast of the times; that is the purpose of our reform," said Deng Xiaoping, the visionary chief architect of China's reform and opening-up which began in 1978 when the country's incidence of rural poverty was 97.5 percent. Eradicating poverty is a war China must win, with the hardest and most arduous tasks lie in the country's rural areas and poverty-stricken regions. In 2020, all of China's nearly 100 million rural residents living below the current poverty line shook off poverty after eight years of arduous efforts.
