‘Netaji was the reason why the British left India’
Image: A visitor looks at a picture of Subhas Chandra Bose at a museum in Kolkata. Photograph: Rupak De Chowdhuri/Reuters 'The non-violent movement would not have brought freedom to the country, that had to be an armed struggle.' C handra Kumar Bose is Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's grand nephew. After the Narendra Modi government declassified 100 files on Netaji, C K Bose joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, raising eyebrows why a descendant of Netaji, who was once a president of the Indian National Congress, would join a party that is opposed to the Congress. C K Bose (seen, below left, with BJP President Amit Shah) spoke to Syed Firdaus Ashraf/ Rediff.com about why he had joined the BJP and the controversies swirling around the declassification of the Netaji files. Why did you join the BJP? Subhas Chandra Bose was one of the first nationalists of India. I can say the BJP is a nationalist party. Joining a party obviously cannot be for one or two reasons, it has ... » Learn More about ‘Netaji was the reason why the British left India’
Aarushi’s murder trial and a tale about India
'If the State does want to come after you, in India, it can do pretty much anything. And often it isn't as though the orders are coming from the President or prime minister, no, the systems have been built in a way -- or we have allowed them to be built in a way -- that almost encourages crushing of liberties.' 'Ekta Kapoor understands things a lot better than anybody else. Absolutely a genius... She tapped into this quite early: That post liberalisation there is a relatively moneyed and large middle class which actually thinks in a very kind of saas-bahu way.' Avirook Sen speaks to Vaihayasi P Daniel/ Rediff.com about his book Aarushi , and the murder trial that transfixed India. F our people -- including a 13-year-old child with a shining face and glowing eyes that shall never sparkle again -- paid with their lives for a repugnant crime that took place in a middle-class locality in Noida, outside New Delhi, in 2008. As a nation, we firmly believed ... » Learn More about Aarushi’s murder trial and a tale about India
What makes Earth home, asks David Attenborough’s new series ‘A Perfect Planet’
Volcanoes, thunderstorms, oceans, the sun — life on Earth flourishes when there is a perfect balance between these varied geological and climatic conditions. Sony BBC Earth’s A Perfect Planet adds a fifth driving force: humans. So how does a species that should be a blip on natural history’s radar — modern humans have existed for 2,00,000 of earth’s 4.5 billion years — change the course of the planet so dramatically? Producer Huw Cordey sets out for answers in this series narrated by David Attenborough — now 94 and still going strong. Produced by Huw Cordey and narrated by David Attenborough, A Perfect Planet marries earth sciences with animal behaviour in BBC’s familiar style of blue chip filmmaking. Its release after the pandemic is “serendipitous,” says Huw. “Most people see the forces of nature, such as volcanoes, as destructive so we were keen to set the record straight!” adds Huw, who has also worked on the Jungles episode for Netflix’s Our Planet , and Dancing with ... » Learn More about What makes Earth home, asks David Attenborough’s new series ‘A Perfect Planet’
World no closer to answer on Covid origins despite WHO probe: Expert
Despite a high-profile visit to China by a team of international experts in January, the world is no closer to knowing the origins of Covid-19 , according to one of the authors of an open letter calling for a new investigation into the pandemic. "At this point we are no further advanced than we were a year ago," said Nikolai Petrovsky, an expert in vaccines at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia, and one of 26 global experts who signed the open letter, published on Thursday. In January, a team of scientists picked by the World Health Organization (WHO) visited hospitals and research institutes in Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the coronavirus was identified, in search of clues about the origins of Covid-19. But the mission has come under fire, with critics accusing the WHO of relying too much on politically compromised Chinese fieldwork and data. Team members also said China was reluctant to share vital data that could show Covid-19 was circulating months ... » Learn More about World no closer to answer on Covid origins despite WHO probe: Expert
Vaccine passports, Covid’s next political flashpoint
The next major flashpoint over coronavirus response has already provoked cries of tyranny and discrimination in Britain, protests in Denmark, digital disinformation in the United States and geopolitical skirmishing within the European Union . The subject of debate: vaccine passports — government-issued cards or smartphone badges stating that the bearer has been inoculated against the coronavirus. The idea is to allow families to reunite, economies to restart and hundreds of millions of people who have received a shot to return to a degree of normalcy, all without spreading the virus. Some versions of the documentation might permit bearers to travel internationally. Others would allow entry to vaccinated-only spaces like gyms, concert venues and restaurants. While such passports are still hypothetical in most places, Israel became the first to roll out its own last week, capitalizing on its high vaccination rate. Several European countries are considering following. ... » Learn More about Vaccine passports, Covid’s next political flashpoint
Plan to ditch the mask after Covid vaccination? Not so fast
With 50 million Americans immunized against the coronavirus, and millions more joining the ranks every day, the urgent question on many minds is: When can I throw away my mask? It’s a deeper question than it seems — about a return to normalcy, about how soon vaccinated Americans can hug loved ones, get together with friends, and go to concerts, shopping malls and restaurants without feeling threatened by the coronavirus. Certainly many state officials are ready. On Tuesday, Texas lifted its mask mandate, along with all restrictions on businesses, and Mississippi quickly followed suit. Governors in both states cited declining infection rates and rising numbers of citizens getting vaccinated. But the pandemic is not yet over, and scientists are counseling patience. It seems clear that small groups of vaccinated people can get together without much worry about infecting one another. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is expected shortly to issue new guidelines ... » Learn More about Plan to ditch the mask after Covid vaccination? Not so fast
