La Liga: Atletico slip up against Levante

· February 18, 2021 ·

Photograph: Pablo Morano/Reuters La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid offered new hope to Real Madrid and Barcelona of getting back into the title race after they could only draw 1-1 at Levante on Wednesday. Levante went ahead in the 17th minute against the run of play after their group pressing helped win the ball and Jorge de Frutos accelerated down the pitch before he passed to Enis Bardhi who pulled off a composed finish. Atletico levelled shortly before the break with a speculative shot from Marcos Llorente which took a heavy deflection off the head of Levante defender Rober Pier to wrong-foot keeper Aitor Fernandez. The game, postponed from the start of the season, offered Atletico the chance to peel further away from nearest challengers Real Madrid but a second draw in three games only moved them on to 55 points. They are still in the driving seat for a first title since 2014, … [Read more...] about La Liga: Atletico slip up against Levante

Chile minister says navy made mistake on tsunami

· March 1, 2010 ·

Chile's defence minister said on Sunday that the navy made a mistake by not immediately issuing a tsunami warning after a mammoth earthquake, a step that could have helped coastal villagers flee to higher ground sooner. Francisco Vidal said, however, that an alarm was later sounded by port captains. He said that saved hundreds if not thousands of lives. ``The navy committed an error in not alerting the tsunami,'' Mr Vidal said at a news conference. Immediately after Saturday's magnitude-8.8 quake, President Michelle Bachelet played down the threat of a tsunami, saying large waves were expected but no tsunami. However, several coastal communities were smashed into by what authorities later recognized were tsunami waves. Mr Vidal said that fortunately the navy has an emergency plan that allows navy officials in each port to sound alarms automatically when a rise in the sea is observed without waiting for an order from above. In this case, port captains sounded an alarm alerting … [Read more...] about Chile minister says navy made mistake on tsunami

They filled the Madras AIR with magic — simply

· November 8, 2018 ·

“There was a time, when you rigged up a radio, using a hair shed by your neighbour’s cat, a spring from your sofa and a few other odd things. But you now have wireless sets, although they have more wires than anything else! Earlier, you were happy if you caught the word ‘Madras’ when you switched on your primitive radio. But now you have programmes through the day. “Life isn’t easy for the staff of All India Radio either. The other day, a speaker was bombarded with instructions by the staff — ‘Don’t speak so fast.’ ‘Don’t speak so slowly.’ ‘Not so formal.’ The speaker became speechless with fear, and the announcer had to snatch the script from him and read it!” Also Read Of pioneers, who raised the bar in AIR Madras Those are excerpts from an article titled ‘ Pochu anda naal,’ written by Victor Paranjothi, in the Ananda Vikatan Deepavali Malar (1938). Heeding the voice of conscience

· September 16, 2019 ·

Some readers felt that that my column on the communication blackout in Jammu and Kashmir, (“A disturbing downward spiral”, September 9, 2019), did not display the restraint that is necessary in these unusual times. I agree with them that we live in unusual times. How else can one explain the current situation where courts get to decide who should meet whom and whether the deliberations of such meetings can be shared with the larger world? On September 13, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court allowed two MPs of the Lok Sabha belonging to the National Conference (NC) party to meet Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, the president and vice president of the NC, respectively. The court ruled that the meeting of the petitioners with their party leaders should be restricted to a “courtesy call to know about their wellbeing” and should not be followed by interactions with the press. I agree with legal scholar Gautam Bhatia’s contention that the Supreme Court has become “The absentee … [Read more...] about Heeding the voice of conscience

Darknet crypto kingpin JokerStash retires after illicit $1 billion run: Research

· February 13, 2021 ·

LONDON: The kingpin or kingpins of the world's biggest illicit credit card marketplace have retired after making an estimated fortune of over $1 billion in cryptocurrency , according to research by blockchain analysis firm Elliptic shared with Reuters. The "Joker's Stash" marketplace, where stolen credit cards and identity data traded hands for bitcoin and other digital coins, ceased operations this month, Elliptic said on Friday, in what it called a rare example of such a site bowing out on its own terms. Criminal use of cryptocurrencies has long worried regulators, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde calling last month for tighter oversight. While terrorist financing and money laundering are top of law-enforcement concerns, narcotics, fraud, scams and ransomware are among the chief areas of illegal use of digital currencies, according to Elliptic co-founder Tom Robinson. Joker's Stash was launched in … [Read more...] about Darknet crypto kingpin JokerStash retires after illicit $1 billion run: Research
