Video PlayerClose NAIROBI, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Kenya on Thursday launched an initiative to improve access to quality mental health care and enhance protection of citizens with cognitive impairments. Susan Mochache, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Health, said the initiative will help the country address rising cases of mental illness linked to rapid urbanization and broken social structures. "The country has witnessed an unprecedented rate of suicide death and increasing burden due to substance use disorders and related complications, even among children and adolescents," Mochache said at a mental health forum in Nairobi. She said persons with mental illnesses are often ostracized, stereotyped, feared or shunned by the society hence denying timely care to enable them to achieve their full potential. "The trend of erroneously ascribing mental illness to curses, evil spirits or witchcraft must stop," said Mochache. She said the rising burden of mental ailments in the country … [Read more...] about Kenya launches initiative to promote mental health for citizens

Research by Mariwala Health, Ascent Foundation finds that only 7% seek professional help for their depression, anxiety. Seven days after Mariwala Health Initiative (MHI) and Ascent Foundation – the two ventures headed by Marico chairman Harsh Mariwala – embarked on a project, on July 23, to study the mental health of Indian entrepreneurs, Café Coffee Day owner VG Siddhartha was found to have killed himself. The reason for the suicide was allegedly business-related depression. But for MHI and Ascent, it validated the urgent need to look at stress and anxiety among entrepreneurs, and how they cope with it. On Thursday, at its fourth annual conclave, Ascent Foundation and MHI released what is likely the country’s first report on the mental health of entrepreneurs, entitled Entrepreneurial Wellbeing: Wearing Many Hats. “We felt the need to look at the stress entrepreneurs experience, which results in anxiety, depression and worse, taking your life,” … [Read more...] about Cash issues, fear of failure are main causes of stress
Less than two hours before Alexander Urtula was due to graduate from Boston College, the promising 22-year-old student, struggling with declining mental health, took his own life. His girlfriend Inyoung You, 21, a South Korean student also studying at the college, had tracked Mr Urtula on his iPhone to a parking garage in the US city, where she allegedly watched him end his life just after 8.30am on May 20 this year. Suffolk District lawyer Rachael Rollins alleged the young college couple had exchanged more than 74,000 texts and that Ms You was responsible for more than 47,000 of them. Thousands of those were of Ms You explicitly telling her boyfriend to “go die”. However, Ms You, who has been living in Asia after she withdrew from Boston College, challenged the narrative. On Tuesday, her legal team released text messages to the Boston Globethat, according to the publication, reveal Ms You saying “please” more than 100 times as she allegedly tried to stop her … [Read more...] about Texts show woman charged over boyfriend’s death pleaded with him to stop
