Video Player Close BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The purchasing managers' index (PMI) for China's non-manufacturing sector came in at 51.4 in February, down from 52.4 of January, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said Sunday. A reading above 50 indicates expansion, while a reading below it reflects contraction. In February, the sub-index for business activities in the services sector stood at 50.8, dropping from 51.1 in January. This indicated China's services sector continued to expand, yet at a slower pace, said Zhao Qinghe, senior statistician at NBS, while analyzing the February reading. In breakdown, consumption-related segments such as retail sales, catering and entertainment logged increases in business activities, Zhao said. The sub-indexes for business activities in telecommunications and satellite transmission as well as financial services came in at above 58, indicating steady growth of business volume in these areas, according to Zhao. Fuel prices increased due to dip in supply: Oil min
“No one can predict the rise or fall in petroleum prices. After a massive drop in demand during the Covid-19 crisis, the oil-producing countries had reduced production to 10-12 million barrels in May 2020 from 100 million earlier,” Pradhan said while talking to reporters at circuit house here on Saturday. “When demand started increasing they were asked to increase production and had assured to do so by February. They did not increase production leading to demand-supply imbalance and increase of price,” he added. LPG consumption increases massively in Europe during winter and falls after March-end following which prices are likely to dip, said Pradhan. The cascading effect on other sectors is natural, but the tax component is not being disturbed as the government has to spend Rs 35,000 crore on Covid vaccine and development spending has increased 32% this year. Being the third-largest energy consumer country, all efforts are on to rein in oil prices, he said. “We are in ... » Learn More about Fuel prices increased due to dip in supply: Oil min

Indian rocket PSLV puts Brazil’s Amazonia-1 satellite into orbit
India on Sunday morning successfully placed into orbit Brazil 's earth observation satellite Amazonia-1in a textbook style. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C51 (PSLV-C51) blasted off from the first launch pad at 10.24 a.m. laden with 19 satellites including Amazonia-1 . At 10.24 a.m. the 44.4 metre tall PSLV-C51 rocket blasted off from the first launch pad here laden with 19 satellites-foreign and Indian- and slowly rose-up towards the skies with thick orange flame at its tail. The rocket slowly gained speed as it went up while emitting a rolling thunder sound. IISER Kolkata scientists simulate Mars on the computer, suggest how it lost its atmosphere
A new and exciting field in astronomy to study exoplanets and gauge whether they possess conditions that will favour the presence and sustainability of life. In this quest, an important part is looking at our own celestial backyard to gain insights – hence the many missions to Mars and Venus probing for signs of past life. One thing that astronomers search for in exoplanets, in the so-called Goldilocks zone of habitability, is the existence of liquid water and an atmosphere like that on Earth. In this context it is believed by many that Mars once had such an atmosphere. The mechanism as to why it lost its atmosphere has remained in doubt. Scientists from Indian Institution for Science Education and Research (IISER) Kolkata suggest that it was the planet’s intrinsic magnetic dynamo which, by shielding its atmosphere from the sun’s solar wind, protected its atmosphere. When the magnetic dynamo switched off, the atmosphere slowly was eroded by the solar wind and eventually vanished, ... » Learn More about IISER Kolkata scientists simulate Mars on the computer, suggest how it lost its atmosphere
