Rugby-France deny Wales Grand Slam with last-gap victory
PARIS: France denied Wales a second Six Nations Grand Slam in three years when Brice Dulin scored a stoppage-time try to give them a 32-30 home victory on Saturday. Dulin dived over as France completed a remarkable turnaround to give Les Bleus the win and a bonus point that leaves them needing to beat Scotland on Friday with a bonus point and make up a 20-point deficit to top the standings. Wales had the game firmly in hand but picked up two yellow cards in the finale and were left them exposed to France's late fury. They lead the table with 20 points with France in third place on 15. ‘Incredible’ France finish denies Wales Six Nations Grand Slam
After a series of drives led to space out wide, Dulin duly crossed in the corner with the clock 94 seconds into the red to spoil the Welsh party and keep French hopes alive PARIS: Brice Dulin scored an "incredible" injury-time try to help 14-man France to a 32-30 home win over Wales and stop the visitors from claiming a Six Nations Grand Slam. Lock Paul Willemse was sent off for the hosts, who can claim the championship title on Friday should they seal a bonus-point victory over Scotland with a winning points margin of at least 21. "The team believed in their stars, their destiny and their ability to climb the mountain," France coach Fabien Galthie told France Televisions. "We knew what was at stake, we knew the opponents, the dynamic they were in, so we knew what to expect but the scenario is incredible." Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones said losing two players to the sin bin in the closing 10 minutes proved costly. "I thought we were pretty good for 80 minutes but it was ... » Learn More about ‘Incredible’ France finish denies Wales Six Nations Grand Slam

Ex-Health chief slams slow vaccine rollout
Former Health secretary and Iloilo First District Rep. Janette Garin called on the government to fast-track the rollout of Covid-19 vaccines, saying frontliners in various sectors should be prioritized in the program. “It is not correct to finish all health care workers first before other frontliners,” she told reporters on Wednesday. “It is imperative that we continue vaccinating those who are willing to be vaccinated.” The ex-DoH chief reiterated that the government cannot force people to be inoculated. “They should vaccinate people ‘simultaneously’ should they want to stop the surge of infections in the country,” she added. Garin also put the spotlight on the three basic T’s: testing, tracing and treating, emphasizing that full protection from the virus only takes effect two to four weeks after the second dose. “In a country of 111 million people, we have [only] vaccinated around .002 percent. Where is the urgency? Where is that ‘gusto’ to save lives and protect our people?” ... » Learn More about Ex-Health chief slams slow vaccine rollout
Osaka’s rise: from shy youngster to four-time Grand Slam champion
FILE – Tennis – Australian Open – Women’s Singles Final – Melbourne Park, Melbourne, Australia, February 20, 2021 Japan’s Naomi Osaka celebrates winning her final match against Jennifer Brady of the U.S. REUTERS/Loren Elliott Naomi Osaka, who swept to her fourth Grand Slam title in as many major finals with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Jennifer Brady on Saturday, has made a rapid and at times uncomfortable climb to the top. The 23-year-old’s zen-like mentality and increased gravitas on and off the court have elevated her alongside Serena Williams to being the one of the most recognizable female athletes on the planet. But it is her unceasing politeness away from the battlefield, coupled with the on-court steel that runs through all champions, that makes her stand apart. “Do you like to be called Jenny or Jennifer?” she almost timidly asked Brady before embarking on her winner’s speech on Saturday. It was typical of Osaka, who also gave a deferential bow to Williams after ... » Learn More about Osaka’s rise: from shy youngster to four-time Grand Slam champion
Mayor slams environmentalists over trash
PHUKET TOWN: The Mayor of Phuket Town, Phumisak Hongyok, has responded angrily to criticism by environmentalists of the town’s garbage incinerator, which began operations just a couple of months ago. At a recent conference in Phuket Town, organized by such groups as Greenpeace and the Phuket Environmental Protection Group, Dr Paul Connett, chemistry professor from the University of St Lawrence in New York, slammed garbage incinerators as a major producer of poisonous materials. “Incinerators release chemical toxins such as dioxins and furans into the air. And they don’t destroy trash; they just change it into ash that is contaminated with toxins,” Dr Connett said. He said that Phuket should be using recycling to solve its garbage problems, and urged that the incinerator should be just one part of a center for dealing with garbage. “Incinerators don’t go well with tourism,” he added. “But tourists will be impressed if the Thai people try to re-use and recycle materials.” Mayor Phumisak ... » Learn More about Mayor slams environmentalists over trash
Lacson slams ‘malicious’ photo as ‘dirty hatchet job’
MANILA, Philippines — Senator Panfilo Lacson has slammed as a “dirty hatchet job,” a “malicious” photo circulating in social media which he said is insinuating that he is already posturing for the 2022 elections. Lacson said Thursday evening that he has instructed his staff to identify those behind the circulation of his photo with the caption “P-angulong I-aayos N-a muli ang G-obyerno.” (the president who will fix the government.) “It is a dirty hatchet job, to put it mildly – being circulated at a time when some propagandists, with the aid of troll farms, are accusing me of politicking by criticizing the handling of the pandemic,” he said. “Now comes this photo to make it appear that I’m really politicizing the situation—and nothing can be further from the truth,” he added. The senator noted that the photo circulated shortly after presidential spokesperson Harry Roque accused those criticizing the government’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic of politicking during ... » Learn More about Lacson slams ‘malicious’ photo as ‘dirty hatchet job’
