The ‘Mumbai 24x7’ initiative allowing malls, shops, and eateries that do not serve alcohol to remain open all night with police permission, has found momentum again with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) approaching prominent malls to remain open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Assistant commissioners of the 24 administrative wards along with the Mumbai Police have started talks with big malls, following municipal commissioner Praveen Pardeshi’s directions last week. We will start with a few big malls in each of the seven zones in the city,” Pardeshi told Hindustan Times.Shiv Sena had first mooted the concept in 2013 and has been following up on it since, with Sena legislator Aaditya Thackeray pushing for … [Read more...] about Mumbai 24×7: BMC approaches malls in 24 wards to stay open through the night

ATO issues urgent phone scam warning
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has issued an urgent warning about the overseas scam calls, which manipulate caller identification to appear as if they are coming from a real ATO phone number. Scammers have adopted “robocall” technology to send prerecorded messages demanding payment of a tax debt and threatening immediate arrest. If the recipient answers the phone, at the end of the message they will get an option to speak to a human, who will attempt to keep the caller on the line until payment is made and may become rude or aggressive. “I think scammers are trying different techniques,” ATO assistant commissioner Gavin Siebert said. “This particular technique is called caller ID spoofing. What we are seeing is people will get a missed call, they’ll call us back and it goes through to an ATO officer, which almost legitimises the scammer,” The ATO has received 40,225 reports of impersonation scams since January, compared with about 30,000 … [Read more...] about ATO issues urgent phone scam warning
The Taste With Vir: A rose by any other name: Why Indians shy away from the great rose perfumes
If I tried to sell you a fragrance called ‘Rose’, my guess is that you would be reluctant to buy it. Indians like roses but we associate the scent with sherbet or rosewater. In India, unlike the West, rose is what perfumers would call a gourmand smell or one that reminds us of food. And so, we are reluctant to put it on our bodies. It isn’t just the gourmand element. There was a time, a couple of decades ago, when everyone loved vanilla perfumes even though they smelled like ice-cream. And people still wear Angel which is credited with popularising the cotton candy smell of ethyl maltol (a fragrance synthetic) and whose success led to a rash of chocolate perfumes. It is also, I think, that at some deep, subliminal level, Indians regard rose as too desi a smell. We do not associate it with expensive perfume and are reluctant to spend money on something that seems so ordinary and downmarket, almost as though it was a bottle of cheap … [Read more...] about The Taste With Vir: A rose by any other name: Why Indians shy away from the great rose perfumes
