Mumbai: Most fund managers are projecting Calendar 2020 to be a year of midcaps and smallcaps. Fund schemes focused on these stocks have seen huge inflows in recent times. So which are the stocks these asset managers are betting on to ride this expected resurgence in midcaps and smallcaps? Data compiled from mutual fund tracker Value Research showed the top five midcaps that mutual funds picked in January included NMDC, Page Industries , Narayana Hrudayalaya, United Breweries, Cholamandalam Investment & Finance. In the smallcap space, fund managers’ top buys included Kei Industries, Multi Commodity Exchange India, La Opala RG, CARE Ratings, and V-Mart Retail. State-run Indian miner NMDC topped the chart on an aggregate basis, but the stock has remained an underperformer, slipping 15.74 per cent so far in 2020. In a note on February 6, JM Financial came out with a ‘buy’ rating on the stock. “Auctions in Odisha are in full swing with highest bidders of 7 … [Read more...] about Top midcaps & smallcaps that MFs are lapping up. Are these schemes good?-Bishal Das You are currently investing in two thematic schemes, a tax-saving scheme, and small cap scheme. Though your two thematic schemes are performing well, we do not recommend thematic schemes to retail investors as sectors and themes can get in and out of fashion in different phases in the economy. However, banking and finance theme is a prominent theme in the Indian stock market and almost every mutual fund scheme has significant investments in it. You should be aware about the extra risk you take while betting on a scheme that is dedicated exclusively to a theme or sector. Small cap schemes are extremely risky and they can also be very volatile. That is why these schemes are recommended only to investors … [Read more...] about Am I investing in good mutual funds?

The problem is that the government at any point of time tries to maximise the revenue by pricing and not realising that greater good has to be done by using these PSUs to enlarge the equity markets which continue to be shallow. We are still talking to very small numbers of investors. My recommendation has been that while allotting to small retail investors, you can put a cap of Rs 50,000-100,000. You can even put in a lock-in of one month but give a hefty discount … [Read more...] about Rope in retail investors by offering PSU IPOs at a discount: Prithvi Haldea, Prime Database
